i originally had an 89 iroc z28 but i sold it about a year ago and it was honestly my livelyhood, however technical mayhem, an automatic trans and a twist of fate brouth an end to that. im at this site because the last site i was in is gone and a friend of mine is in here and swears upon the knowledge of some of the senior members. now a year later i am considering buying another z28. only thing is i want a 350 and 5spd without exception. problem is im only buying another z if i can pick up a 91 or 92 z28 305 5sp manual. at which time i want to build a 350 (probably a 383 or 391) and run it with the t5. my point of concern is the electrical element of what happens with the wiring harness, gauges, sensors.1 if i decide to take the carburated route, or 2 if i keep the fuel injection. also i would like to now what to expect during this swap what is necessary in doing so and any idea on which is more cost efficient and most likely to produce power for the money. if im not confident in swapping engines without problems a may buy a early 90s cobra (which ill easily find in a manual.) please just keep that in mind without holding it against me

 

Welcome aboard. There are plenty of knowledgeable people who hang around, but you may have put them off with your Colbra comment. So, you're stuck with me...

Really, though, the factory never made a 350 with 5-speed. Why they didn't has been much debated, but the two reasons I tend to believe are 1) the 5-speed is too weak for the 350 torque for them to risk a bunch of warranty claims, and 2) difficulty getting emissions certification with 350/5-speed. So, if you want such a combo, you're going to have to make it yourself.

The stronger 5-speed is what they call the "World Class" T5 transmission. Do a search on the Tranny forum for more info about them. Many people use that tranny behind stout 305's and 350's, even race them, but you don't get away with excessive abuse.

Other options include a Tremec tranny or T56. They will take the torque of a 350 or 383, but will raise the cost and complexity of the swap considerably.

 

thanks since i have already had a camaro i do now a respectable amount about them in which id like to mention it has also been said that the corvette had a lot to do with the 350 5spd combo never being introduced. simply put gm maintains the corvette hierarchy at all costs (exactly what killed the gnx is in 89 i believe,it turned a quicker et than the vette.) so i do know id have to switch either a motor or trans to do so. i chose a motor swap because i think itll be easier considering if i did the trans id pull the motor to beef it up anyway.im just concerermed about working around the wiring harness. as far as scaring people off with the cobra comment if f bodys are better in their mind it shouldnt hinder the likelyness to respond. ive had an iroc z and a 92 5.0 and to tell you the truth the 5.0 was easier to upgrade and maintain as well as faster in the 0-60 the 5.0 had bolton mods and the z had a 368 cubic inch crate motor that bench dynoed in the neighborhood of 350.if i had to guess the mustang probably made about 300. im actually waiting on pics from a guy a met online at a 93 cobra. i just wanted another camaro because i think the appearance better suits a muscle car. as much as id like to have a 92 z i think i may go the other route. camaros are beautiful cars but are a mechanical blunder with an overpriced aftermarket and anyone who disagrees is a fool or a liar. anyways thanks for the reply but i must admit it may have been too little too late.

 

Making the Camaro faster than Vettes is another theory put forth. In fact, the turbo Regal GN's were faster in '86 than the Vettes, although the Vettes caught up not long after.

I hope you realize the Cobra comment was tongue-in-cheek. But, I have a co-worker who has spent more money on wheels and tires on his '96, and that's the least of what he's spent, than I've got in my Camaro, and I'm about a tenth slower in the 1/4 than he is. With equal rear ratio, I'd be quicker than he is.

Some of my best friends drive Fords & Mopars. But, perhaps that just means I need to get out more...

much obliged, the cobra comment (dare i say cobra so many times on this board) which i feel i must defend is the price difference between the two cars. i have to admit i like camaros and trans ams alike but i hold no alleigance with a manufacturer, meaning i dont drive fords or chevys, rather anything i can make fast. i wanted a 92 z28 because in the end my iroc looked almost identical to one but to get the car to where i want it there is a lot of bs id have to chase down. the problem with late thirdgens i think is everything depends on everything. what i mean is to do the car right you have to do it all at once engine, trans, comp, drivetrain. with my iroc it seemed the more power it cranked out the more often stupid things broke. it nickel and dimed me to death. in the end i had blown trans and thought the motor had major mech malfunction. the guy that bought it said after rebuilding the trans he found it was an electrical problem with the injectors and paid over 3500 dollars in the process of fixing it and eventually giving up and putting a carb on it. my mustang was much simpler in design and i think if you spend a lot of money beefing a car up simpler is better. i still may get a z28 im still considering the options and how much i expect to pay because im swithching the motor as soon as i get it. and whichever seems more reasonable ill go with. the cobra is appealing because parts dont cost as much and to do the engine,body,trans,wheels, exhaust, and suspension on a fox chassis mustang will cost in the area of 12grand, which i think i can do in about a year ( im 20 and make about 20k a year and live at home.) but to do everything on a z i think would be considerably more. that and i dont know if you can help but to put a carbed motor in a late 3rd gen what do i have to do with the wiring harness? i heard if you unplug it the only thing that will work is the speedo?

Since you are completely sold on the cobra, why don't you try comparing it to a car of its own class instead of some old 80s camaro. I'm sure a z06 vette would give you something to swear about. Try running a stock z06 against any stock cobra you can throw at it.

Also, yes, I do own a thirdgen as well. I am truly sorry for your old '89 IROC, it deserved a better owner than you. No wonder it gave you so much trouble.

cuz i started the thread about swapping a motor in a car, not a cobra all i said for the last time is i was considering it amongst other things. what bothers me is people who are nothing, or know nothing putting their 2 cents where its not needed. for instance your on a post talking about rebuilding a v6 and all the sudden im like "hey v6s are junk" that gets under my skin. yeah to each their own to start all this lame ford crap take it to a message board for kids. i guess i just cant stand close minded people its the same for the anti ford, imports, chevy alike and its retarded.
