I need your opinion........

I'm looking to put a new motor in my 91 RS 305.

I'm 16 and don't have a whole lot o' money.

Here is what I want: I basically want a fast car that beats **** and wins aginst most cars. I want torque. I want it to be on pump gas as this is a daily driver. I'm keeping the TH700R4. Does anyone have a target HP range?

go with a 350, that will give you more power there... only problem is... HP costs $$$. You could do some small mods yourself, like porting the plenum/intake/heads, etc. You will probably be pretty happy with it. Any questions feel free to ask.

If you want power cheap dump the TPI and go with a carbed 350.

Carb Vs. TPI arguments aside. You may have to keep TPI if you already have a TPI based car. I know in several states that you have to keep the emissions systems the car came with. Aftermarket equivalents are ok. But if your car came with fuel injection you may have to keep it in order to pass emissions testing. If you don't have that in your area I would say go carb. Carbs are alot easier to work with and a whole lot cheaper to make power.

Many will argue about the TPI systems ability to handle weather and climate changes. This is true. I can and have started my TA and driven without really letting it warm up. Whether or not it's cold or hot out. Doesn't make a difference. I just start and go.

Many improvements have been made in the newer carbs to allow for better driveability.

Also keep in mind that if you have to work on it yourself TPI is very complex in comparison. Problems with it are sometimes hard to pin down. And if you have to put the car in the shop for any reason TPI can definatley add to both parts and labor costs.

Well right now I can get a compleatly rebuilt (remaned) 400cid engine with sucky 882 heads for about $1000. I think thats a good price. I think that I try to get it without the heads or Vortec 906's. So all I need is a intake and carb/efi. I would love to go with a superam but this is a budget build- mainly because I'm sick of ricers that can kinda keep up. For this year I basically want the the cheapest power I can make. Next year I can do more to it, ya know what I mean?

Engine Approx 1,000
Sell 882 heads -100
Sell new stock cam -50
Get Vortec Heads 300
So far 1,250

Plus intake, cam, and induction.

Do you have any suggestions on what type of carb would be the best? Probbly like 750 cfm. Like I said if I can find a good used one I probbly would do that. Same with the intake.

Thanks for your help

My buddy has a 69' camaro with a 383 stroker and he runs a 770cfm holly street avenger and he loves it, easy to mess around with.

The carb question could be more accurately answered once you know what kind of cam, intake, etc. you are using... you don't want to have too much or too little on the carb, so once you find what cam and intake you are going to run, then we'll have a fairly good idea of what carb you can go with to make you

If this motor is for the street and must be reasonable on gas (well... reasonable for a 400 anyway ) I would go with a dual plane intake and about a 700-750cfm carb.

Don't ask me about cams though, ask someone else
