Looking for Dependable Torque
After alot of reading, searching and some posting, I have decided not to try and build a Big Block for my Z28. My questions concern looking for a dependable small block with a lot of torque. Below is my current idea:
A nice 383, with some vortec heads, and nice cam, basically built from the begginning. Will this be dependable, and provide the earth shattering torque I am looking for?

If you want ALOT of torque, the best way to go is a 383 with something like 8:1 compression and a good size blower.
But if you want naturally aspirated torque, do with a 406... more ci=more torque.

I think a 383 or larger engine with a TPI setup and some good heads, deep gears, and lots of nitrous is just what the doctor ordered. It will be dependable and very drivable, unless you detonated under heavy spray!!

Thanks for all the information :hail: I was considering perhaps going carbed, do you really think I should go TPI? The main reason I was considering going carbed, is just the old fashion muscle car style setup. Any suggestions?

I think if you already have TPI stay with it. If you want great drivability and the possibility for better gas mileage then go with the TPI. There is nothing wrong with carbs. They are easy to work with, do not require expensive tools to diagnose, and can get good mileage and drivability. I am just a big fan of EFI systems, and personally, would never get rid of one in favor of a carb on a street car. Now if you are going for more of a race car style setup then maybe a good carb setup is for you. It will be cheaper than upgrading a TPI with aftermarket parts. My 2 cents.
Carb is easier and cheaper for tuning compared to TPI.
Choose a cam that is made for a pickup to provide low end torque for pulling.
GMPP makes 2 383's. One is the 383 HT. It makes 325 hp with 400 lbs ft between 2000 and 4000 rpm with a max of 425 lbsft.
they are also comping out with a ZZ383. It will make 425 hp and 480 lbs ft of torque.
Find out more information. It may be cheaper to buy with their warantee than to build it yourself.
