For a grand to spend u could make a fairly stout 350. I'd say to find a good running 350,get some head work done, then cam intake and a decent carb...Then spend what you have left on exhaust.

I had a complete 355 figured out with EVERYTHING I wanted and alot of extras and it was $979.99... For the stuff I listed you can get it used for pretty cheap. I got an Edelbrock Dual plane intake for $15 off ebay, and a Holley 650 for $65 off ebay...Just keep your eye out for used. People know how wanted 350s are, so best bet for finding a good running one is to find an old car thats ugly and selling for Dirt Cheap and yank the motor. I scored my 300 hp 327 in a 68' BelAir wagon for $200 for the whole car.Probably your biggest expense would be head work. Find a reputable shop and see what they charge for a good port job and any other work you want!
