Crate Motor swap.....
Spring is on the way and I am starting on my project now hopefully.... I have been saving up for years and I am ready to replace the old 305 TBI in my 91 RS convertible.... I plan on swapping to TPI and definitely to a 350.... I am just wondering if anyone could give me some good recommendations or websites for crate motors.... I have seen the Scoggind Dickey TPI crate..... but does anyone else have anyhints. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Just wondering why you're going for a crate? Pressed for time or just looking for an easy solution? You should consider building your own motor, apples to apples you could get more hp and torque out of a motor you built yourself for the same price or lesser than what you'd pay for a crate.. Don't get me wrong some crates are a good deal, with the warranty coverage on some of them.. But me, I'd feel better knowing I've got something more unique and that I put my knowledge/time/effort into.. But, if you insist on crates I'd say go with www.goautocenter.com They offer a warranty on a few of their "stock" replacements. Or I could be wrong, they may offer a warranty on all of them. My friend bought a crate from them and had no problems, and I've never heard any complaints from anyone about them..
There are some good deals out there on crates Soul, if you search around. Why spend time going piece by piece for blocks, intakes, heads, and all the internals, when you can have a machine shop have one built already assembled for you? In the end, if you factor time and money in, I am sure the difference is not much more significant if you do it either way.
Well I'm sure you can find somebody who sells a great crate motor for about the same price it would cost for you to build it yourself but keep in mind you get what ya pay for. Go to speedomotive and get one of their crate motors for unbelievably low prices.. Just do a search on the "Aftermarket Vendor Review" board about Speedomotive first.. And trust me I have done some searching on crates.. There's not a whole lot to talk about. And the ones that are pretty nice have a nice pricetag on them too.

I am pressed for time.... I do not have a garage to do it in and I am only going to have about a week top get it done.... plus I do not really want the hassle.... I have already been through the whole engine building thing (a stroker 357 in a 68 mustang coupe) and I would prefer just to get the crate and pop it in.

www.rebuiltcarengines.com/highperfengines.html is a great site.
I know "rebuilt" is in the name of the website, but most of their engines are new, and they have good warranties. This is where I considered getting a 355hp ZZ4, but decided against a crate motor...hope this helps..

I checked out Speedomotive on the Better Business Bureau site and they are in excellent standing with them. Not saying they're gonna be perfect, everyone screws up here and there, but according to BBB all complaints brought to the attention of the company were dealt with satisfactoraly and not ignored. I also searched for another notorious engine builder and they were in poor standing with the BBB for being *******s and building crappy engines (Mark's Performance Engines out of AZ). I don't get why Speedomotive has gotten such a bad rep, unless the people complaining about them haven't tried to settle with them or anything like that...
