im looking for a 400 sbc short block, i have heads intake and everything else i think i need,wheres the best place to buy a short block im trying to put together a decent motor on a budget and ive decided on the 400, any help on the best place to order a 400 short block would be great.

If you're not looking to spend too much money go to a junk yard. In fact before that go to www.car-part.com and find the exact block you want call whoever has it , see if it has any garantee against cracks. It IS MANDATORY that you get the block magnafluxed or equvilant. I've complete 400 motors for under $500 and after you get it honed or even bored it's still pretty cheap. so yeah i think that's your best bet...

 

Check your local machine shops, especially the ones who do work for the stock car guys. The shop I deal with had several complete 400's in the rack out back. You could get them to do the machine work, then do the assembly yourself.

 

thanks for the reply guys i hve a complete 350 crate engine but i dont want to use a 350 in this car becuase all the cars around here are big blocks with the 396 ot that i couldnt build the 350 up to outrun a 396 its just a preference thing, ill keep checking around maybe something will turn up
