Need help with emissions question
Need help with emissions question
Ok, after reading things from this board and from everywhere else, I am more confused than I was before.
Here's the deal. I am planning to put HO 350 into my 88 camaro which right now has 2.8L V6. Here's one link to this engine HO350 from gmpartsdirect.com
The description says the engine is good for 75 and newer vehicles, but it has Holley carb. I thought the only "legal" carb was q-jet because it is controlled by a computer. As far as I can tell, Holley carb is mechanical and the engine has a mechanical HEI distributor (p/n 1104067).
How can this engine be legal for newer cars then????
Is anyone here from NY? How much hassle do you get with emissions people in this state?

That Ram Jet 350 looks like the only one that will work in our FI cars if your state requires FI equipped vehicles to remain FI equipped. What I want to know beyond that is, how much are those engines?
well I'll be......
I have no idea where I was looking. My only explanation is that GM webpage describes every engine as "1975 and earlier". This is the only one that said "1975 and older." I guess I overlooked the fact that no matter how they say it, they mean pretty much the same thing.
Thanks for the response

check this out, its a 326 hp 350..and its emissions legal!! i plan to purchase this for my 89 http://www.desertperformance.com/engines.htm
Ok, how about plan B. I am from upstate NY. I just spend several hours going through state and EPA regulations and CFR documents and ..... I am back.
As far as I can tell the only places in NY that get sniffed are New York City and suburbs. The only emissions test in upstate is gas cap test and some more stuff for 1996 and newer cars.
Do you guys think I will be able to get away with installing that HO 350 into my 88 camaro even though GM site says "1975 and older"? or another crate engine? My goal is still to install something that can make ~350hp with a carb.
I've been going back and forth on this for 2 weeks now. I need help big time.
Plus I can always argue that brand new carb engine has lower emissions that 2.8L with 140,000 miles on it. That engine is pretty dead. So I would be disabling factory ECM and putting in a different engine with a goal to improve emissions.
