engine id

first off...i'd like to introduce myself. im blade_nem! i came here from www.projectcamaro.com awesome site. anyway i went to my local mechanic the other day looking for an id on my new 1985 camaro. the guy i got it from said that there was an engine swap with a 350. a replacement to the stock 305 that came with my sport coupe. The guy said i'd have to get some numbers off of the block. And i'd have to send the number into GM and get info from them. Now...im a mechanic in the making. im 17 and don't know too much about cars yet. The engine is carburated and i would like to know what it takes to get to the id on my engine...if ya need pics, i've got em. but i warn you. it's not a pretty picture. the engine bay looks real bad...im in the process of cleaning it out! thank you for the help and i'm glad to be here wit y'all

the casting numbers are located on the driver side back of the motor, they are on the block right next to where the tranny bolts up to. they can be hard to see sometime and you may need a small mirror to find them. that's about the only way to tell the difference between a 350 and a 305 except for pulling the heads off and measuring the bore on the cylinders. once you get the casting numbers got to "www.mortec.com" and look them up.

Look in this post, I posted a pic that shows head castings, but one of the pics just happens to have a block casting number in it (3951509 in that particular case). That's an example of what you're looking for.

In a motor that's in a car, it's right out in the open, on the top of the bell housing flange on the rear of the engine, behind the driver's side head. Get that number, you can look it up and it will tell you what the bore of the block is, which is the difference between a 305 and a 350. You can't turn a 305 block into a 350, so if turns out it has a 305 block, it's a 305.
