Is there any difference in the block itself between a 454 tall deck and the standard car big block? I'm lead to believe it's just the heads and intake that are different. ( It would be a 3 way swap,454 into the vette, 350 into the Z28, and 305 into the may be purchased suburban).

Ummmm.... yeah, the deck is taller. Specifically, the deck surface is .400" farther from the crank centerline.

Heads are the same dimensions. Truck heads such as come on tall-deck motors are absolute crap. Don't bother swapping that stuff into a car you expect to be fast. The intake is wider, since the heads are farther apart. Intakes for tall-deck blocks are pretty much one of only 2 kinds: either they're stock truck junk; or they're for people with mid-500-inch to 600-inch motors that run 8000 RPM and make 900 HP or more. Not much in between.

Tall-deck motors are considerably more difficult to install in one of these chassis than a regular car big block. Accessories become a major issue since car accessory brackets won't work (the heads aren't in the right place), and interference problems with the wiper motor, brake booster, and steering column are amplified.

Not sure of anything, except the guy selling the truck pulled out the "car big block" for his car and dropped this "454 truck engine " in the suburban. I'm going to leave it alone. thanks.

I don't know of a tall deck 454 either, but that doesn't necessarily mean (to me) that there isn't one...

It's real hard to say what this guy has or has done. I believe I'd pass too, since if all you want is a big block, they're cheaper when they aren't wrapped in some suppisedly working sheet metal. I sure as hell wouldn't hallucinate that a vehicle of that size and weight would be useful for anything with a LG4 in it, that's for sure; that part of the plan is definitely weak. That thing would have a tough time breaking into the 22-second bracket, let alone carry anything or pull anything.

Just go to a wrecker. They will have normal-deck big blocks they more than likely. The wrecker here has at least 3 454's that i have seen, and for only $600 CDN (about $6 USD, lol)
