Here's the flywheel I used on my 408 w\ T5 tranny.
Since the 400 SBC is external balanced, to use that flywheel, you must run a balance plate that bolts between the flywheel and the crank. I don't remember what company I got mine from, but a quick search on the net came up with this site. They have one for $15.
Some will say that the "porkchop" (balance plate) is not as good as taking a stock 305 flywheel to a machine shop and having it "unbalanced". I can tell you from experience that I use the plate and have had my engine in excess of 6000 RPM on many occasions with no problems.
Good Luck

this $15.00 will work
I am faced with a similar situation? this balancer plate for $15.00 will allow me to mate the 400 flyweel to my 86' T5? what should i use for a starter? If this is true than, i am forever greatful!

Bless you all!
I get it! the balancer plate allows me to use my stock 305 flywheel! all it is doing is balancing the assembly so i dont have to use the special externally balanced flywheel for the 400. Then the stock starter will most likely bolt up?
Thank you so much, now im back on track with my 400!

yes, the plate sandwiches between the crank and the inside of the flywheel. and balances a 305 flywheel to a 400 flywheel.

FYI, you can't use your stock 305 starter on a 400. 400's have a staggered bolt pattern. I used this aftermarket mini starter with staggered bolt pattern.
i am actually using my stock 305 starter. it bolts right up. i dunno if whoever had the motor before me had a different hole tapped into the block or not, but it worked for me when i had the car runnin, back in january.
