Desperate for help with my engine!

Guys, I have a dilemma- my car is TOO damn slow. I own a 1988 Camaro SC with a 305 TBI engine and the factory 4-speed automatic. Granted, it's not a Dodge Colt or Hyundai Excel by any means, but it still does not live up to the 'Camaro' name, in my mind. I was just wondering what the best bang for my buck would be, motor wise. Should I bother investing money into the 305 TBI engine (which others have told me is not a very good engine for performance) or just swap it for a 350 TPI (which everyone seems to recommend). So guys, if you have ANY knowledge whatsoever in this area, please help me out! I've saved up a good amount of money, and just need to know which would be my best bet for a more reliable, FASTER engine to build the rest of my car around. Thanks!

(P.S. For mods, I've only added on a 3" Flowmaster Exhaust system (sans cat) which sounds awesome!)

Time is no problem whatsoever. It's going to be a like year long project, basically, I figure. I'll have a couple grand to work with.,
