SDPC 360hp TPI crate and CA smog
Would anyone be able to shed some light on whether this engine would pass a CA smog test (with a custom chip). Here are the specs:
(I think every part is CARB certified)
SDPC part# SD360VTPI
link to SDPC site with this engine
Compression 9.6 to 1
Hydraulic roller cam
Duration (I/E) @ 0.5" 218/228
Lift (I/E) 0.525"/0.525"
2 bolt, 1 piece rear seal. Crank 3.48"
Vortec 64cc heads
Intake: SDPC TPI Vortec Baseplate
Scoggin-Dickey says:
357 hp and 416 ft/lbs of torque.
And that I should use EGR kit SD3816
Thanks a lot!!

From http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...1460&pid=13775 :
"The SDPC TPI Vortec Baseplate will accept the factory EGR system from most Corvette applications. All other applications will require EGR Modifications. EGR kit # SD3816 has all of the necessary components required for most applications that are using CARB approved headers on F-Body cars. The TPI Vortec Baseplate has not been approved for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles in any state of the USA. Please check with local laws for EGR requirements."
It would "pass" sniffer, most likely, but an aware inspector would send you home with your tail between your legs.
So, the question is, "Do you feel lucky?"

I also like the fact that their dyno test was with headers that would not pass emissions muster...

So has anyone had any experience with this engine? I tried figuring up building a 383 with the vortec TPI and it came out more than the crate, so I'm prob gonna go with the crate.
Anyone have any ideas on what a thirdgen would run in the 1/4 with the vortec TPI crate?

It's not the motor as per say, It's got to be offered that year ( engine size ) and it has to have everything on it that it came with for that year and if it has a 50 state legal mod then you better have the ARB stickers. If you roll in and you have your act together, it is a clean install and all is in order. Timing's on and it is a 305 .. lol.. meaning it's gonna have to pass NOx at 10 dgrees and better be set there when it rolls in.. You pass the figures I'd pass it... I've had this conversation with some of my buddies who are test only/Referee and they don't care what type of heads are on it. Make it right.. ALso, nothing uis ever for sure. but chances are you'll pull if off if you spend the time in trying...

Here is a thread to what I think you are looking for. I believe one of these guys has the system you want and passed smog 2 or 3 times.

The major problem is the egr valve. Vortec has noplace to connect it. So they went to the header. (see Pic)
I like this motor also, and one my be in my distance future.
