Guestimate the cost of a 427 sbc

What do you think it would cost? Was thinking of a good street motor with some stirp time. An EFI set up. Iron block with iron or aluminum heads. Can someone give me any insight to how much it would be to build one?>

You could get a big block and have it refreshed..

I think theres a strocker kit for the 400 sbc that gives u that ..

Or fing an old rocket block.. was designed to use chevy crank-rods

according to the lingenfelter book.

The big block probably has a steel crank already ..

spec... it would be very hard to make a small block out of a big block!!!! hehehe. The reason I wana small block because i like the nice size of it and it wont get another look.. a sleeper kinda car... but will push near 400 to 500hp. anyone else have any input? Cant I use a regular small block 350 and bore/stroke it out?

Old saying "If you have to ask the cost of it, then you can not afford it". Any 427 gone to cost Big Big Bucks. So if you want one be prepared to spend some serious money.

The biggest part of the cost is the 400 block (GM or otherwise) and the 4" stroke crank. You'll probably wanna go with 6" rods too, just to keep it in one peice when you get a little too enthusiastic

Lunati makes a 4" stroke crank, but its something like $1500 i think.

i guess that 421 would need the block to be bored over to get 427? wow... that is a lot of compression!!! even for teh 76cc heads. Wow, thats really not bad. now to find a 400 block!! i guess bore over .030? maybe i wont get the dome pistons, just regular flat top's.
thank you again... TPI383 you rock man...

Alex my friends brother has a 71 chevelle with a custom 427 sbc puttin out over 550hp at the flywheel and somewhere near like 475 or more i think ft. lbs of torque. the motor has cost him so far 8-9,000 and right now he's having the motor rebalenced becuz something get messed up. just something to think about.

oops.. sorry.. my bad..

The olds rocket block can be brought up to
468 cu.in, thanks to its 9.325 tall deck.

its heavy.. 200 lbs.

its designed to use chevy crank-rod -camshaft and head.

I would build a rocket block over a 400...

But they're rare... so the 400 wins I guess..

A small block 427 won't cost you too much more than a high quality 350 build. A small block 427 has a 4.125 in. bore and a 4in. stroke. The hardest part would be finding a stock cast iron block that has the thickness in the cylinder walls to allow you to bore it out that much. Other than that, the cost would be driven up or down depending on the parts you used. Obviously it will be more expensive than just a 350 but if you play it smart, I would think that 8k-10k on the engine would be a good estimate if you are using all new parts. If you use rebuilt/referbished stock components where ever you can you'll save alot. I would suggest you read "How to build max performace small block chevrolet engines on a budget" by David Vizard. Good luck.

A small block 427 has a 4.125 in. bore
That's the stock 400 bore, no overbore.

It's unlikely that one would build a 427 with a used block. Most likely it would be a 434, which is a .030" over 400 block.

Cost would depend on how much of the work (grinding etc.) you do yourself. The crank, rods & pistons will run about $2200-2500 for street-grade parts. Of course, there are plenty of ways to spend more than that. A certain amount of machine work and grinding will be necessary, and a small-base-circle cam might also be needed.

Using an aftermarket block such as the Dart little M or a World Products motown. Put all aftermarket quality name brand internals in it & you will be over ten grand "pan to heads " not including the cost of the intake & fuel delivery system"
Trust me, I have the receipts to prove it
