is it worth it?
I've got a 305tpi w/ lt1 cam and 22lb injectors........what I'm wondering is if it would be worth swapping in a worn out 400 keeping the TPI until I got the cash for a an engine rebuild. I probably won't rebuild the 400 which would allow me to continue to drive the car while I build some engine (305,350,383). So yeah.....Would I see any performance increase over the 305 to make it worth the trouble of dropping the 400 in or should I just stick with the 305?
Also would headers and 3" exhaust allow a 350 or 383 to breath well enough for ~300-350hp/~400tq?

Why bother? I would rebuild the 400 while keeping the car drivable. That makes the most sense to me. You mentioned building another engine while the "worn out" 400 is in the car. Does your car not run right now?
I think it would be a waste of time to install a "worn out" engine and then save for a rebuild.
I guess you would see an increase of power, but who knows with a "worn out" engine. And yes, headers and 3" exhaust are plenty to allow an engine to breathe. Just my take on the situation...
PS. many people on these boards are very happy with 400+ cubes under their hoods. Save up and rebuild the 400 as a 406 with a stealth ram and you will really be happy later on...
