replacing carbed 350 for carbed 454
OK -- I have a 350 right now with a non CC- Qjet and a non CC dissy and I want to swap in a 454. This is for an 81 chevy K-10 so the swap seems pretty simple. Sorry that its not my F-body but that swap should follow this one shortly, and this board is full of experts so forgive me for the truck question.
My plan was to pass emissions with the new motor so I think the only crate type 454 with EGR passages in the heads is the goodwrench #12339193 but I dont know for sure.

However -- the goodwrench longblock is missing lots of stuff that GMPP crate motors usually come with (oil pan, balancer, VC's, pumps ect) and it is getting pretty expensive. 2600 for the long block (no core return) plus 900+ for all the stuff to complete the goodwrench motor to the point it has all the stuff a GMPP crate motor would.
I also have to spend 2300 for the stuff I would have to buy for any new big block (GMPP or Goodwrench) to make emissions like the manifold, carb, accesory brackets, headers, and some upgrades to the cooling system.
Im thinkin if one of the GMPP 454 or 502 crate motors has egr passages I could just buy that and spend the 2300 making it emissions legal and still come out cheaper than assembling a goodwrench longblock.
The purpose of the motor and truck is for towing/hauling and eventually a roots blower when the truck turns 25 (no longer needs to be emissions compliant).
what should I do?

I did some searching online and asked some people I know and they implied that all you need for a working EGR system is for the heads to have the heat crossover passages open. Then the egr takes exhaust from the crossover.
If this is true then I could just get the HT502 crate motor and slap an edlebrock egr manifold on it and presto -- I can pass emissions (with cats of course).
Right??
I mean I know people have passed emissions without a functioning egr system but it makes it much easyer for NOx reduction.
