what to look for in a block
I made a post in another topic here, and came up with some questions, and didn't want to hijack the posts, so i am putting it here. what do you think about useing a j-yard truck block? there abundont. 4-bolt main, you can nab them for under 100$ at my pick and pull. clean it up.But what should i look for in a block down there? Should i pull the heads down there to look for cracks, but what else should i lok for wile im down there?
cracks are very hard to see, look for wear, ridges in the cylinders no rust or pitting, signs of over heatings, baked on oil. look for one from a low mile wreck. as a rule i'd say you'd be ok buying a builder engine, most cars and trucks don't end up i na yard becasue the engine was wore out

if your going to get a bone yard motor you best bet is to find a low miles motor that was hit in the rear of the car or a roll over. like ede said. what i do when i ever build a bone yard motor i rip it apart and bore it .030 over or just hone it but why build a stock motor :-D but i would get is hot tanked, decked, and flushed and then get new cam bearing pressed in. after all that is done and there are no cracks its time to start building the motor. but when looking for a motor again like ede said look for a low miles motor look for one that has to sign of over heating pull the dip stick and see how ****ty the oil is.
