400 search HELP

what kind of vehicles did 400's come in.

the best i've found so far is one out a a 70's school bus. would that be a 400SBC or 400BBC. its is a 400, so could it be a SBC. the exhaust manifold primaries are evenly spaced apart like on a BBC, but is it possible its a SBC. does anyone know. that would be awesome!

as you've discovered there are two 400 offered by chevy at the same time, one BBC and one SBC. sounds like you found a BBC, but i'd suspect it's a 427. it might be worth getting. the SBC 400s were found in impalas, biscaynes, big cars ,wagons and trucks. i think i remember working on a olds or two with a 400 but not sure.

the motor never said 6.1 litre but but it was a 6100 series bus. i can get the motor for free and it is complete and running.

its either a 366 or 427 i've narrowed it down to.

would a 366 be worth getting? do they have potential for power?i wouldn't put it in a thidgen of course.

6.1 L thats got to be a 366.

The tall deck 427 is an OK motor if you've got the cash for a tall deck intake and headers.
But the tall deck 366 (not that a std deck 366 was made) is worthless, don't bother with it.
You'll get more power out of a mild 350 then you will a 366.

a 400 would be a 6.6L, and actually, the SBC and BBC werent both 400s... the sbc was a 400, the big block was a 402.

are there any casting numbers on the block somewhere so i could tell if its a 400 by looking at it without taking it apart.
