Help with 383 Combo
I'm getting ready to start my 383 transplant and I have a few questions to ask. Oh yeah, I tried a search on this and got a lot of BS and nothing to really help me. So anyways.......
My current list of parts in hand that I'm going to use are the HSR, corvette aluminum heads(will be fully ported along with the HSR), 1.6 RR, 25lb injectors, & 52 mm TB.
1. With the current parts, what cam would you recommend to give me really good power and not kill me in drivability?
2. Since this car is going to be street legal/driven and needs to pass a sniffer, what comp. ratio should good to get me thorugh both parts?
3. With both 1 & 2 in consideration, what is the most HP/TRQ you think that I can get out of the combo?
Thanks in advance guys!

This is one of those "get the package right" things.
I don't know the RPM range of the HSR, and couldn't find much on their site. But, the cam should be selected so that those two work together. However, too much overlap can kill you at emissions time. And, computers are known to be picky about those things, too. So talk to the cam manufacturers about your plans so they can keep you out of trouble.
Compression should be kept in line with cam and pump gas considerations.
FWIW, I know a fellow 3rd gen'r who has a ZZ3 with CNC ported heads, Big Mouth, plenum & runners all extrude-honed together, heads shaved & block decked for almost 11:1 CR, with ZZ9 cam & 1.6:1 rockers that breezed through our enhanced dyno sniffer. So, it can be done. (Well, he's now moved to D/FW, and with 30 lb injectors in [used 19's for the testing here] hasn't passed their emissions testing - he thinks the cats are shot from being run too rich out at Bandimere after he passed the emissions testing - I think the injectors are too big for his needs...)

I researched that combo. If your running a roller cam. I would check out a comp grind like the XR269. There xtreme energy Marine cams seem to get along well with fuel injection also. Flat tappet or roller.

Cool. That's about what I was thinking for compression. I don't want to really go over 11:1. That's good to hear that your buddy was able to get through without problems. Thanks for the info about the cams. When I get closer to being done I'll give a few of them a call to see what they have to say.

As long as it's sniffer-only, it should pass. That's one area of emissions where cam overlap can help you.
The later versions of the HO 350 Conversion Kit (emissions-legal carb'd ZZ4) deleted the EGR entirely.

Yeah, you don't need the EGR to pass here in AZ. Alot of people have already stopped using there's, me included and I can pass with flying colors as of right now. All we have is a sniffer test and a visual inspection. Nothing too serious.
