Is it true that I can replace my carbed 305 with any small block chevy V8. As long as I replace the fuel injection with a carb? Or are there other stuff that needs to be considered?

 

It all depends on what you want and what your wallet will let you get away with. Seems like lots of people on the boards have convereted from TPI to carb and vice versa. Any SBC will fit, but you may need new engine mounts depending on what you're putting in. There's quite a few Goodwrench engines that are ready to accept a carb OR fuel injection. But for the moment, I think your question is too broad to get the answers you need.

 

Some years with noteable changes during the SBC era: 1957, 1968, 1986, 1987, 1992/3, 1996 (other break-downs could be argued).

If you stay between 1968 and 1985, then what you said is basically true. If you stay between 1968 and 1992, only minor adjustments have to be made. 1967-earlier or 1993-later - after you get an engine from either of those periods, we'll talk specifics.

 

First off...how hard would it be to get a pre-85 350 from a Junk Yard?
Second is it worth swaping in a newer engine over one of the older ones...

Yes the LS1 is a much better motor than the motor out of a 1984 vette. But its not a regular run of the mill small block. Its a Gen 3 small block and no parts are interchangable between an LS1 and an normal SBC.

 

hey ksrammstein, did you install the hooker 2055 on your car? I am hoping to get some for my '84 trans am with the 305, but would like to know how hard the installation on the headers is? Did you have to jack the engine up or do anything?

 

I have them, but they are not on the car yet...still too cold, plus I want to get my cat-back first so I can install everything all at once.
