87 GTA Engine upgrade
87 GTA Engine upgrade
My car is an 87 GTA (MPI) 5.7LTR (L98?). I'm considering upgrading the engine. I have access to a rebiult set of Fuelly (camel back) heads and I'd like to throw in a high performance cam and lifter set. My question is:
A) Will this work since the car is FI , computer controlled?
B) Since I'd be changing the heads and the cam, how do I determine the push rod lengths?
Any input on this would be greatly appreciated since I am a backyard mechanic who normally performs standard R&R type work. This one may be over my head.........Thanks

Be careful which cam you get.. not all will co-operate with your computer. And avoid solid lifters... they will make your computer go bonkers.

I assume you mean camel "hump" heads. They're the best performance heads available from the factory in the 60's. Most don't have accessory bolt holes on the ends, so aren't viable for use in a 3rd gen that retains all the creature comforts (like alternator).
They also don't perform any better than mildly ported L98 heads.
Do yourself a favor and pass on the old school heads. Do the porting work on the heads, have screw-in rocker studs installed, use a computer-compatible cam (Summit lists several), stay with the roller style. You'll have fewer hassles and better performance in the end.
FWIW, you determine proper pushrod length after the heads are installed using a pushrod length checking tool.
