305 need some tips
hey people i got a 86 camaro with a V6 i just swaped in a 10 bolt 373 posi and i got a 305 compelte i wonna drop in with some perfromance goodies till i get enough money to finish my 355 i want to do.... ok here it goes my buddy got a 72 nova with a 350 3 speed manual 2 barrol headers thats it pulls really freaking hard off the line ... no trackion it leaves 1 wheel peals i wonna build this 305 with some goodies... its gonnna have a 350 turbo with a shift kit.. 373 posi unit. and 3k stall conver what kinda goodies can i slap in the 305 to make it run ok.. i wonna keep the bottem end stock.. i pulled it apart its clean.. so the short block and up any tips its only a weekend car..
ok dude, a 3000 stall is a waste of money on a stock short block 305. Dont even bother. I'm not gonna start the get a 350 thing, because you should. However you dont. Three things make a fast car. Cam, heads, intake/carb setup. Look into it, do some searches. These are the ways to make power. Also, what do you mean by 2 barrel headers?? YOu lost me.

sorry for confusing yous what i am saying is my buddy got a 72 nova with a 350 with headers duel exhaust and a 2 barrol carb and it pulls pretty hard its 3 speend on the floor and i got a 86 camaro V6 swaping to a 305 for now till my 355 is built.. but he don't think i can get a 305 to beat his car.. i wonna keep the 305 bottem end stock what cam and intake and carb would be good for this it will be using a 350 turbo tranny with a shift kit and i just put in a 10 bolt posi rear with 373's
i gotcha, you had me a little worried there with the 2 barrel headers!
I think you can get a 305 to beat his car, assuming of course that he doesnt have a 400 horse 350 or anything like that. I'm not sure I understand why you want to build the 305 and then build a 350 too. You could probably get away with porting the heads yourself, swapping a bigger cam into it, buy the intake manifold you want on your 350 (so you can use it again), and a good carb. Go from there. I wouldnt worry too much about your buddy. If he has a stock 350, you stand a good chance with a stock 305. My dad had a 1970 nova with the good ol' 3 speed on the floor. If you ask him he will tell you that it was the single worst geared transmission he ever had. Totally ruined any aspect of performance that the car had. Couple that with your friends heavy *** car (not sure of exact weight, but i'm sure its more than a 3rd gen), and you stand a real good chance. Also, depending on the casting number of those heads, they may be good to use on your 350, dont forget to check.

the heads are 882s i am getting a set of dart heads for my 355 when i get the block to the machine shop i just want the 305 in for now till i am ready with the 355 but what cam should i use for now i am gonna use a super victor intake and what carb i got hedman long tube headers and 3'' duel exhaust with dynomax bullets
Well, not much resembling performance will be gotten from those 882's but they will work. The only real problem is the fact that you are putting them on a 305. I think they will clear the 305 cylinders, but compression is gone. I'm not sure what it would be, but it would be low (like ready for a supercharger low). As for a cam, I like comp cams. Some people like crane, lunati, etc. I run a magnum cam with 230/230 dur @ .050 and .480 lift int/exh. Its nice and healthy. Most people here will tell you that it is an outdated grind, get something with newer technology, etc. The XE series comp cams are nice. The 305 probably wouldn't be good with much more than a XE274 ( think it is). Check comp cams website and see what they offer. Just remember, you dont want to overdo cam, especially with those heads. You are looking at press in studs probably so the lift is a real issue. I would look for something more mild. As far as a carb goes, I like edelbrock. They are easy to get running good, they are easy to keep tuned, they are just an all around good street carb. If I was building a track only car, it would have a holly (or variation), but for a daily driver, edelbrock all the way. Vic Jr. is a great intake, I like them. Good luck with that engine.

Man, I would seriously stay away from the solid lifter valvetrain. Thats just me though, lots of guys here run the stuff with no problems and they love it. If you are thinking of putting those 882's on a 350, dont. Find some better heads. But back to the point that seems like a lot of cam for a 305. I'm not sure how everything would run, but if you got it running right , I would imagine you could take your buddy. What valve size do your heads have??
