DO it myself or pay someone?

Hey guys

I have an 85 trans am with a 305 tpi with a knock and a whistling intake. I found a 95 lt1 with everything i need for 900 bucks from a local guy. I have little mechanic knowledge and theres this guy who will do the swap for another 800 bucks. should i do it myself or let him do it.

I would only do it yourself if you have all the know how and the tools needed. It can be a rewarding project if you know what you are doing. If not, it may take you longer than expected. 800 bucks is a bargin to have an lt1 swapped in. Does that include splicing all the wiring and hoses?

well the guy knows a lot about f-bods he had like 4 so he knows exactly what he is doing so he doesnt charge me extra labor hours. he charges 500 for the engine swap and 300 for wiring

Normally I would shout, "DO IT YOURSELF!"

But, you seem to have a special circumstance that warrants having someone else do it - that being the relatively low price being quoted. I'd still try to have as much of a hand as possible in it so you gain some of that lacking mechanic knowledge. Makes the whole performance scene that much more fun IMHO.

Texas LT1's swap guide is as close as it gets I think. I'm sure someone will chime in with a link before I can dig one up.
Found it! http://www.geocities.com/texaslt1/lt1swap/swap.html

It will be when Tristan's done with it. I'm about to start the swap in a few weeks, and plenty of people have done it already. You best bet is to utilize the search button for a lot of questions you may have. Chances are it's been covered before. Good luck!

That's a good price ,If you don't have the tools (hoist, engine stand ,etc) and a friend that has swapped motors before. I think you might want to farm it out. There are many small items that can really screw you up if you have'nt done it before. There is no shame in leaving it to an expert.
