Out with the computer

I live in the wonderful state of Oregon where once a car reaches 21 years there are no more inspections for smog or any thing else...any thing is now possible. I would love to rip out my stupid computer on my 84Z and all of the other performance robbing junk. Once the computer is out, what items will not work that may have to be changed or adjusted? thanx, Ed.

The carb and the dist. wont work properly w/o the ecm. The CC q-jet is fine for most of the stuff youll want to do and it wont rob you of power. Why not just remove teh AIR and the other things that really get in the way and leave the computer intact?

i would suggest after market carb intake and dist. but if you do not want to spend the money. the carb will work with out the computer but will not be very adjustable. you can get a 70's hei distributer(the one without the wires sticking out) from the junk yard for cheap. i ran my car this way for a while. it ran a couple of tenths faster though it may be miss tuning of previous ign system.
if you do get the junk yard dist make sure to replace cap+rotor. you can get upgrade coils and modules from summit or jegs.

No, the carb will not work without the computer, it will run obscenely rich.

keep the computer till you really starting getting into it, then get a nice new billet MSD and a demon carb or holley or what ever floats your boat.

But as dimented24x7 mentioned get rid of the real smog crap first then the computer can go last.

Out with the puter

Well I have the jest of all that was said. First all of the clutter goes so I can get to and change the plugs....then it's onwards and upwards. I may run the computer a little longer till the 350/385hp arrives. Thanks for all, Ed.:yourock:

i ran my car this way for two or three years, if it were rich or lean i would have seen an increase in ET not a decrease.

No you wouldn't. The WOT mixture would be unchanged but it would be rich at idle and part throttle.

It's easier to just identify it by the presence of the vacuum advance can.
