price for bare block/shortblock

Im currently enrolled in an auto program at the local community college and theres a class where we're mandated to build/rebuild an engine. I figure i might as we'll build something killer.

I wont have the class until next semester or the following but I want to start piecing it together so the expenses dont hit me all at once (college thing comes into play there).

So my main question is what kind of price range am i looking at for a standard/stock bore sb 400?

#1 - I want a price range the block or a short block.

#2 - What should i be willing to pay for a complete engine if i come across one during my search?

#3 - I would like to find a 2 bolt main, should i be willing to pay slightly more, how much more?

Check the classifieds on the board.

Check the classifieds in your local area.

Ask around machine and speed shops in your area.

Your questions really can't be answered beyond, "Shop around. Don't get taken." If somebody here says, "I got my shortblock builder for 75 cents," you can be pretty certain that you won't find such a deal. But, if somebody at your local junkyard is telling you they have the only 2-bolt block available in the United States, and if you want it it's going to cost you $2000, then I hope you know you should pass on that and go order a new Motown block.

I don't know what else we can tell you.

I suppose thats understandable. I was just really hoping for a
"I wouldn't pay any more than $____ for a bare block" or a "if you keep your eyes open you should be able to find a decent short block for around $____"

something like that is acceptable and would be really helpful. Ive never shopped for an engin block before. thanks for the help. Im going to go post in the classifieds and see if i get any response.

I dont know what they normally go for, but I found a bare 400 block that I am supposed to go check out soon for 150. He also has one that is 30 over and has a bad piston that he wants 300 for. I dont know which one I will get yet. I guess it depends on exactly what is in the assembled one, and if the bore is good or not since it is already 30 over.

Personally I'd look for something around $150 bucks and has NOT been bored.

It's really all about what it's worth to you, and what it's worth to the person selling it.
