98 Z28 drivetrain into an 88 Formula
I am new to the board, but have been on ls1tech.com frequently. I am new to the ls1 to 3rd gen swap, but have read other posts here, and have a few questions.
1) Will I have any wiring issues if I use the stock 98 harnesses and computer?
2) Will I have any issues with the stock 3rd gen steering and suspension systems during the swap?
3) The formula is an auto car with no trans, will all of the stuff from the 98 (pedals, clutch master, ect.) work in the formula?
4) What about a throttle cable?
Chris

You're probably not getting much response thus far because you haven't read the two applicable sticky posts above...with "LS1" in their title.
And as I said on ls1tech.com you really want to get acquainted with the Search button.
Read read read, then post. Lots of good info to digest.
1.) No more issues than if you used a '99-02 harness and PCM.
2.) Steering no, suspension will be less than optimal because you removed 150-180 lbs off the front of the car. I downgraded from Moog 5662 springs to GM CDB pieces, and down from a 36mm swaybar to a 34mm swaybar before mine quit understeering after the swap.
3.) The T-56 stuff will fit, but you have to cut a hole in the trans tunnel to accomodate the shifter and drill holes in the firewall to accomodate the clutch master cyl. Check the Transmission forum here, and the Technical Articles link on the main page, for T-56 swap info.
4.) Lokar as posted on ls1tech.com.

Is that the magnum tpi car from high tech performance?
:lala:
as far as the swap..
1) Im using the entire harness/dash/door panels/gas tank from my 99 and putting it in my GTA.. as far as converting it to use the 88 stuff you can get a box from baker elctronics that makes it pretty easy.. i have one here if ur interested, just PM me as Im not using it anymore.. it handles all the ecm controls and will even make the tach work
2) Clearance issues with the A/C and the stock k-member and sometimes the alternator on the front brace.. steering will work fine
3 and 4) You need to use your stock pedal gas pedal.. theres an adjustable ls1 cable that I plan on using, got the part # at home sry
The pedals fit fine after you hack off the gas pedal

Looks just my 88. I miss it.
You can use the throttle cable from the 98. Otherwise you can adapt the electronic setup from the vette.
I chose to stay with the auto because the t-56 has been problematic and I wanted longetity for the drive train. The yank SS3600 converter I have is amazing. No regrets at all.

Yes, that is the magnum TPI car.
I have found out about the adjustable cable available from lokar from ls1tech. The AC will be gone so that is not an issue.
Hawks thirdgen parts has a spedo box that I saw. I am not to concerned with the tach since an autometer will be used for this aplication, however I will need the spedometer to work.

theres two boxes.. the cheap one that will convert digital signals..and run the cruise control signal at the same time.. the sgi-5 from dakota digital
or the 300$ one that will take the electronic VSS signals and convert them into the cable drive.. i cant recall off the top if your 88 is a cable or electronic.. but u cant use cruise unless you get hte top one as well... but thats how to get the speedo goin

Thank you, I believe that it is electronic from 87 and up. Since this is an 88 I think that's what it is. The camaro didn't have the electronic untill 89 if I recall corectly.

previous owner put the engine and trans in a 1st gen camaro. That's ok, I plan on taking this car to the next level with an ls1. Look for this car to appear in the future. Hopefully not as a test mule, but as a feature.
