LT1 vs LS1
Ok what Im wanting to know is...say I swapped in a LT1...how hard and costly would it be for it to match the performance of an LS1...I work with a guy who has an LS1 out of a 98 or so vette just sitting in his shop but Im affraid he wont sell it to me so I may be forced to go the LT1 route...either way is fine since both are nice engines...
Each engine has it's pros and cons and they aren't exactly the same by any means. The LT1 isn't just a detuned version of the LS1.
That said, an LT1 with some head/cam work can easily 'match' the LS1 in terms of hp/tq. I'd say for $1300 you can get some very, very nice heads and a matching cam (Lloyd Eliot) that would very easily pass an LS1 (stock).
I'm going to be putting in an LT1/4 soon. I'd rather have an LS1, but I know I'll get more bang for my buck with the LT.
That's just my opinion/knowledge of the subject.

for the total price of an LS1 swap, you could have an LT1 in with better heads and cam and take out stock to mildly modded LS1's all day long. Like chomp said, the Lloyd Elliot LE1 package will put down 370-390 hp at the wheels. More than enough to handle LS1's. Check out his work at www.eportworks.com.
You definitely can't go wrong with an LS1 though. Simply swapping an LS1 into these cars will have you beating 99% of the stock LS1 F-bodies. The other 1% is the exceptional driver that you don't run across too often. The advantage we have is a few hundred pound weight difference between us an the 4th gens, especially after swapping an LS1 in. I think most people are running 12's on stock LS1's in 3rd gens.

Can't go wrong with either engine.
If you're on a budget, go with the LT1.. it doesn't take much to match an LS1.
But LS1's flow better, have a better top end, and are capable of tons of power easy.
It's all depending on what you want.

Stock for stock the LT1 will be handed its *** against an LS1...but stock for stock an LT4 will be the one walking away...
think of an LT4 as a "traditional" LS1...outstanding midrange power and a top end that doesnt quit...LT4's made peak HP (340) at 5,800 and peak torque (350 lb ft) at 4,600...so as u can see on paper the LT4 is one helluva performer...but in the 1/4 mile it was even sweeter...a factory 97ss ran 13.2@108...and thats faster then 80% of the LS1's out there...
hell when my GTA had the stock carbed Lt4 in it it ran 13.19@109..
if your gonna do an LT motor save yourself some money and start out with LT4 heads....theres a link over at camaroz28.com right now about a set of LT4 heads that Lloyd just ported...306cfm...ill find it now...

There is no doubt that LT4 heads are real performers but there is nothing wrong with the potential of the stockers. You can save a boat load of money and just port them with nearly the same results as the LT4's. Not to mention you won't have to buy an LT4 intake then.

ohh no doubt...the LT1 heads can be ported to flow 280 cfm, not to difficult...and that will support about 575-600 N/A ponies..but if you can get your hands on a set of LT4 heads, youd be way ahead out of the box.. the best stock LT1 head flow 210-215 while the LT4's were just south of 250...not to mention a far superior intake port...and you can actually port match a LT1 intake to LT4 heads but not a LT4 intake to LT1 heads...
i actually built my motor off the fact that i got a really good deal on a set of assembled LT4 heads...there that good
