2001+ from a Vette.

Read this post for lots of great info on the LS1 swap. It can also be found at the very top of this very forum.

it all depends on what your doing. 99-2000 works well. 2000 is nicer then 99 because some came with the ls6 intake and the cam is bigger. 2001 because of the ls6 intake but cam is lower.

99 is better then 97-98 and any of the newer from a vette is always nice. your talking very minor things once you get above a 99 however if you don't plan on doing any modifications then it would pay to notice these smaller details. the biggest seems to be the ls6 intake though which will run you 300+ used unless your lucky to find one used. beyond that most other parts end up getting upgraded with most. 98 and older is good only for the fuel rails as they are easier for adaptation. all things that can be changed on any.

personally i'd look 99+ and go for what has the best mileage price as you'll be fine with any of them.

Oops let me wipe the tears now where does it say for people that have done the swap again im sure we all have time to read the rules on this board. Heres the title LTx and LSx looks pretty broad to me now get a life and stop worrying about questions people ask just dont reply at all. People will ask questions on here and ive seen some pretty stupid ones but I usually just dont reply at all or sometimes I will help out.

No need to read thru the rules, just have someone read you what it says right below the link you clicked on to get into this forum. Up until now I thought that was pretty much idiot-proof.

The engine swap forum is 99.9999% pre-swap posts. Very little useful info for a guy who has already done the swap and has his car running.

And a growing number of the posts are redundant, repetitive, been-answered-several-times questions. Like yours, for example.

This new forum is a great idea and fills the gap, if only there's a way to knock the pre-swap questions back to the Engine Swap forum.

I would look for an '01 or 02 mainly for the LS6 intake. The cam differences were small and didn't affect power as much as the intake did. The earlier years had larger injectors but even the smaller ones support big power. The '01 and 02's didn't have EGR (cam grind allowed it to get by without it) and shared the same cam as the 345hp 6.0 truck motor. Basically you will be happy with any year LS1. Some of the last motors had an LS6 block but that doesn't mean anything other than adding some cool factor to your motor.

FWIW:

I had asked the Admins for a Gen II/III-specific swap forum, and when this one appeared (with no notice to me from them), I also assumed it was for all Gen II/III topics. I have since been corrected (for now, at least).

Since a lot of the responses were not in keeping with Board guidelines, I took the liberty to edit out the non-tech stuff.

My apologies for jumping the gun and not following the Forum guidelines myself.

(If the decision is made to make the new forum all Gen II/III, then this one goes back in there... )

only 20% of 01's and 25% of 02 of camaro's got the LS6 block..(info from CHP magazine) if the block is not as shiney, i heard thats the visual clue, but you can always check the casting #.. 01-02 all got LS6 intakes.. not sure about the cam..

LS1 tech guys have said 98-99 are kinda odd ball motors.. the 00 is the bastard year..

doesnt really matter.. if i had a choice.. i would go 01-02..

Here's some additional info, but please post future pre-swap questions in the Engine Swap forum where they belong.

'01+ have upgraded rod bolts based on ASA failure rates, no recorded rod bolt failures on production pieces since the new ones were introduced.

'01 supposedly has the worst oil consumption problem of the entire series, and my experience w/ my '01 LS1 agrees. '02 is the cream of the crop all around. Revised ring package killed the oil drinking.
