getting rid of VATS in 1990 camaro

i am replacing the 3.1 in my new project car with a completely computerless 305. i did this once before in an 89 and i remember having to cross some wires in order to have power when i turned the key to start. any idea what wire it was? i know it's down behind the kickpanel.

the VATS module is behind the entire dash up agains the firewall on the passenger side.

the actual connection for the key reader is somewhere along the base of the steering column

all i had to do with my last car was to cross a wire that was located behind the kickpanel on the drivers side of the car. where the hood latch is. all i need to know is what wire needs to be crossed...

well, since you're swapping to a carbed setup, it won't matter. all VATS does is allow the computer to turn the fuel pump on. since you won't have an ECM, you shouldn't have to worry about anything.

you're probably talking about the starter relay. If the relay isn't thrown, the starter gets no juice. In my 89' there were four wires going to it, two yellow, and two green. the small green one I ran through a toggle switch to ground. With the switch open, relay not thrown, car won't turn over. With switch closed, relay grounded, car will turn over normally with the key. Hope this helps

Yes, the vats controls many other things like fuel pump relay, injectors, and whatnot. All things that you either do away with without the ecm, or have to find a new way to activate them anyway like the fuel pump. The starter relay is the only thing that you would still need without the ecm. you don't need to wire in a switch like I did, you can also just remove the relay, and connect the wire coming from the key to the wire going to the starter. I don't know witch one's witch, but I like having a sort of kill switch anyway so I left my relay in

edit, you can also just permanently ground the small green wire, but then you still have the relay but without the benefit of a hidden starter kill switch.

ok, so i was looking and the relay has a large yellow and a small yellow, but no green. think that small yellow is the one that needs to go to ground?

hmm i don't know every year's wiring. Pm me your email and i'll send you a pic of what I have. Or Trickster usually can hook anyone up with the correct diragrams for their car. he certainly hooked me up. If you have any pics of what you have send them to me. The relay should have like four wires leading to it though. two of them would make up the signal loop, and the other two should make up the switched loop. But like I said i'm just going off of my particular car.
