305tbi to 350tbi swap

Hi, everyone I just wanted to state that these boards have been essential to me, and im sorry if any of this has come around before but I have done the search and could not find anything really answering my questions.. but... the time has come for a change and I finally got the 305 out and completely rebuilt a 91 tbi 350 I was able to get from a junkyard, my questions come in here..I whent up to a slightly bigger cam with 480 lift and .050 duration if i remember correctly.. I got the open element and all that lil fun stuff and was wondering If I would run into any major problems when trying to start her up im running off the 305 computer but I have the 350 injectors. so far I've mated her to the tranny and starting to get the accesories all put back on i kept the 350 manifolds but they wont fit my old exhaust ..and also if anyone who had done this before maybe had a few do's and dont's I'm recently started college for my AAS in automotive and i got a few experienced buddies with me helpin with the swap but none of us are for sure what results will come out of this. thanks for any info you guys have been a great help to me thusfar just wanted to let ya know that.

You will need to add a higher flowing fuel pump (TPI type), 350 ESC module and a 350 knock sensor as well. You will also need to look into chip work. Your car will run so horrible with the stock 305 tune. It will be an undrivable mess. The best way is to buy the equiptment and learn to burn them yourself. Check out the DIY PROM board for more info. There are also TBI tuning guides linked in the TBI stickies.

I don't know about needing a new fuel pump. You build sounds pretty close to what I did and I used the stock pump with no problems.

Before you pull the engine, get a laptop, ALDL cable and a copy of the ALDL logging software. Start logging data and looking at it. Then buy the chip burning equipment or prominator.
Then transplant the engine.

Have you considered headers to get around your manifold problem?

Also- Shifty hit it dead on- if you put the motor in and don't have the equipment/knowledge to tune, there is a fair chance it will be slower than the 305. Worst case is you burn up the engine by running it lean.

When all the background stuff is taken care of (ie.. tuning logging, etc..) putting the motor in is the easy part!

All you need to know is here for the finding. It just takes some effort.

Thanks alot for your reply's guys i'll take what you said to heart and look into the chip burning software right now, unfortunately i've already pulled out the 305 and sent off to the yard I hope I can still use what I got to make the right tune? and yes I have considered headers but im not sure in which direction i want to head as far as brand..thanks again for your replies you've been a great help.

I was fortunate to have the large injectors (65 #/hr) available to me when building the 350. The 305 injectors pass much less fuel per impulse so the changes to your fuel map will be a bit larger if you stick with the 305 injectors. No biggie if you can raise your fuel pressure with an -Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator- (-AFPR-).

Basic process is: Log Data from new engine, Review Data, Change Bin program as required, Burn Chip (or send new bin to car computer via Prominator). Repeat as needed.

Datalogging- if you search the boards for -WinALDL-, youll see that is software that translates the engine outputs into something humans can understand. You'll need a laptop, -ALDL cable- and -WinALDL software-. Software is free, though the author always appreciates a donation (I am not the author BTB). That will tell you how the new engine is running.

Once you see what changes need to be made, you need to change the engine management program (-Bin-) and get that program onto your cars computer.

Edit Bins: One program is called GM Tuner Pro. There are many others.

Getting the new Bin onto your cars computer
You can go one of 2 basic directions here:
1) Purchase a -Pocket Programmer 2-, -UV light- and some Chips. Read up on how to make the required changes and start writing the modified bins onto chips and installing in your car.

2) Buy a -Prominator-: This relaces the "chip" located in your cars computer and eliminates the need for the Pocket Programmer2 and the UV light. This allows you to send your modified bin directly to the cars computer without removing the chip. It replaces the chip.
Way Way Way Way (with and emphasis on "Way") easier than the burning and replacing chips method. Way.
No I do not profit from the sale of Prominator products, BTB.
There are other options here, I don't mean to stiff anyone. I can only vouch for the Prominator, as that is the only one I hav used.

You may see that I put dashes around some words like this here: -Prominator-. That means that is a good word to search for if you need additional information.

As far as finding headers, try -SLP- and/or -Header-. There are lots of choices.

Best-
