Crate Motor

I have a zz3 with all.heads, that i got from my uncle. He was gonna put it in his 57 chevy but, he had to sell the car. My question is, does it matter thats its been sitten for a couple years? Its still in the crate it came in and packaged up still.

doesn't matter. i'd put all new gaskets in it to be safe, because the ones in that motor are now dried up and brittle, especially any seals with rubber parts. I.E. the timing cover seal and rear main seal, and the intake manifold gaskets. the head gaskets should be ok, but everything else should be replaced, just to be safe and makeit easy on you. otherwise, GREAT find.

I wouldn't do anything extra. They're packaged to be stored, so as long as it wasn't opened or fooled with, it should be fine.

Is the zz3 basically a l98? Im gonna put an hsr on it. Im not sure what injectors i should put in it, 22s? You think my stock tb would be fine or should i get a new1? Will edelbrock headers work with the angled plugs? Or is there a seperate y pipe that u can buy?

Stock TB should be just fine. The ZZ3 and ZZ4 crate engines are L98 engines with ALuminum casted heads. Same design as factory iron L98 heads, just cast out of aluminum(like they did for the corvette). The camshaft however is much more aggressive than a stock L98 camshaft. Compression ratio for the ZZ4 is 10:1 also as listed("AS LISTED")..an L98 camaro should be 9.4:1

I'd bet the ZZ4 has 9.4:1 also.haha

I can't stand working with Edelbrock headers for our cars but with angle plugs they should work better than with straight plugs. Goodluck!

I can't agree with the statements likening ZZ3/4 to L98's. The heads are the same ones used on Vette L98's, the blocks may be the same castings, ZZ3/4 have 4-bolt mains as do Vette L98's, but that's where the similarity ends.

ZZ's have steel cranks, pink or PM rods, hypereutectic flat-top pistons (no slight dish like L98's, which are cast), high volume oil pump, oil pan baffle (not sure if any L98's got the baffle). They also come with q-jet intake manifold and large-cap HEI distributor. And, as noted, a more agressive cam.

The similarities are overwhelmed by the differences.

Make sure you prime the oil system with an old distributor and drill till you see oil coming out the pushrod/rockerarm ends and have 40 psi of pressure or so.

The factory used 22 lb injectors on 350's. With an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, that should work. Or, go we 24 lb.

You could try selling the 305 for two or three hundred, but don't hold your breath. If you somebody is willing to pay you $100 for it, don't wait for a better offer. The heads and roller lifters are the most valuable pieces.

Well, you did say you were putting a HSR on it. So, you might get a little out of the stock TPI parts you don't use.

Did anyone mention PROM tuning yet?

Thanks for the replies guys.
The prom tuning is the area i have little knowledge of. Ive been wondering if a 350 auto chip would work, till i can figure out how to do the burning. That stuff looks like greek to me.

This is my first Fuel Injected and AC car , at first i was gonna take all the comp stuff off. And take what i needed off my 84Z. (It has a 327 with edelbrock rpm cam, edelbrock chane, edelbrock springs, comp roller rockers, rpm air gap intake, edelbrock carb, MSD ignition, headers. It was a pretty quick. Dam tranny was a slippin pos and therw a wrist pin.) But decided not to, after driving it everyday i grew to like fuel injection. Its nice not having to deal with a no choke carb anymore, especially in the winter and decent mpg.

I was gonna put the zz3 in my 84, I was waiting for some free time and was about to order a TCI th-350. And then i found this camaro and had to get it.

Do you still have the '84? The ZZ3 would definately do nicely in that. Keep the '91 as is for the daily.

If you can do 2 cars, that is.

I still have the 84Z but its kinda ruff. Needs new interior, right front fender, front bumper cover and other things.
