'90 305TBI to '86 305TPI
The 305tbi in my beater is very tired (208k miles), and I have a 305tpi out of my deceased '86 IROC that I'd like to put to good use. I stripped the '86 clean, so I should have everything I need from the donor car. I've been told that the difference in years would make this swap a major pain. I assume it has to do with the VATS. Could someone clarify this? Also, the '86 engine and tranny have been sitting in the garage for 5 years. Both ran like a dream before the accident. What all would I need to do to freshen them up before the swap? Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

If the engine was properly closed when removed, then fresh fluids and things like plugs is all it will need. Probably wouldn't hurt to remove the plugs and squirt a little oil in each cylinder and turn the engine over several times.
I don't know enough about the specifics of '90-up to speculate about what problems you'll encounter.
