How to hook up carb/pick-up fuel tank?

Hey guys,

I just did a 6 to 8 conversion, had the electric fuel pump, and needed the pickup unit and tank. Got that from the boneyard.

HOW do you hook up the lines???
There are 4 lines coming from the top of the pump....what goes to which???

Thanks.

I asked the same question a couple of years ago. Great answer.

I'm not sure he was correct, however. I believe I've seen recently on the Board that the return goes to the bottom of the tank. It's smaller than the feed, though.

It's been so long since I did mine, I don't remember. Maybe this picture will help. I wish I had gone this route...you might look into this type of set-up. If so...pull the sender before welding !!!

Fuel Lines....

Francise,

The return line runs parallel to the supply line and is smaller in diameter (as Five7Kid said). They supply and return each reach to the bottom of the tank. If the pick-up assembly originally had a pump and you need to set it up for a carb you'll have to extend the Pick-up with a small section (about 6") of hose to get it to the bottom of the tank. Otherwise you'll be running out of gas at 1/4+ tank level.

The two remaining lines end just inside the tank flange. The smaller of these two "Top Enders" is destined for the connection to the Cannister. The larger has a black plastic cover on it (inside the tank) is located to the far left (facing it from the rear of the car) and goes to the "high pressure relief" (I think that is what it is) that should be mounted just past the tank, behind the driver's rear wheel, above the axle.

Thanks for the great info kboehringer!

If I plug the 2 others (not return or feed obviously),will the car run well? Do I need any of these??

Thanks.

Franchise,
I don't think that plugging the Canister's line will hurt performance but the tank does need to get rid of those fumes/gas pressure that will accumulate from normal driving & heat. I think that the canister's line is the normal route for that pressure/fumes to escape, be recaptured in the canister, and then burned in the combustion process. Obviously, the primary purpose is emissions reduction/compliance, but I think those lines serve a safety purpose as well. I am pretty sure the other line (that terminates above the rear tire) acts like a high pressure relief, I wouldn't plug either one of them.

Just my opinion.....

The tank needs to be "vented". If you think about it, with the tanks starting off full, fuel being drawn out will create a vacuum in the tank - unless air is allowed back in.

The canister provides two functions: 1) Capture vapors the tank puts off from evaporation (the emissions factor); and 2) Allowing air into the tank as the liquid level goes down.

Either use the canister, or if you plug the two lines, get a vented gas cap.

Thanks guys for the great info!

I am going to clean up the tank alittle...how does the sending unit come out? Does it turn out or do the clips need to be turned in? b/c it is a little tight.

Rotate Retaing Ring

franchise,

The sending unit actully pulls straight out, once the retaining ring is removed.

You should not have to "bend" anything to get it out. I "believe" you have to persuade the retaining ring "Counter-Clockwise" although I don't remember for sure. It could be Clock-Wise.

Be sure to use a non-sparking tool like a brass punch or maybe even a paint stick or something that will not damage the ring or create sparks. There will be a large rubber "O"-ring under the assy. Be sure to keep it clean and undamaged.

You will have to wiggle/manipulate the assy. a little to get it out of the tank.

Kurt,

Thanks a ton...awesome advice and info.

I will try it.......good idea on the NON-sparking tool.
