87 up block with 416 heads?

i pulled my 305 today out of my 84 t/a..supposed to be a 2 pc seal L69 engine....

casting number on engine i pulled out of the car

14093627...305...87-91...2...Roller or flat tappet cam, one-piece rear seal

the oddest part is it still has the orginal 416 heads...

i always thought 87 up had centerbolt heads

looks like im off to the store to get a new 84 2pc 153t flywheel

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
The block will bolt up to either type of heads.

Sounds like somebody swapped the short block at some point, and re-used the original heads. Not alot of mystery in any of that.

Maybe I'm a little slow. What engine are you putting back in?

1970 2pc rear main seal 350

the flywheel i took from the car doest work, the bolt pattern is off and the hole is too small...the 350 going in had a 168t flexplate on it...

i wasnt aware that the 87 up blocks accepted the older heads...no mystery i guess then

I think I understand as well now. You expected to be able to use your current 153tooth flexplate on the 1970 engine, only to find out you had a later shortblock.

I'd have to agree with sofa's assessment. Probably happened at a dealer, maybe even under warranty. Put in a new shortblock, reused the original heads.

You had the best of both worlds and didn't even know it. . .

(Did it have a roller cam in it?)

im going to pull the intake off and check

i knew something was up i was running 14.4@96.66 with only a full exhaust, no air cleaner, short throw shifter and the free carb mods

its ok the engine i pulled needed valve stem seals badly and i got the new engine complete from carb to pan(which was recently rebuilt) for next to nothing...
