wdigitog,
I converted my son's '82 CFi to carb. We wanted to keep an ecm and changed his complete harness & computer to a '86 carb harness. I am SOMEWHAT familiar with the crossfire wiring harness. The fuel pump will NOT work without the ECM. You'll have to do some re-wiring to get it to working. You should find several posts where folks have found creative ways to power the pump.
Personally, I prefer using the standard block-mounted pump. It's less expensive than an FPR but will require that you drop the tank and remove the pump. PLEASE DON'T HACK A HOLE TO REMOVE IT IF YOU GO MECHANICAL!
All-in-all you'll probably spend as much time (if not more) installing an FPR and figuring out how to wire the pump than you would to simply remove the pump and install a block mounted. All you'll need is a pump rod as the cam will have a pump lobe.
Depending on what transmission you have installed..... eliminating the ECM will require an aftermarket device to allow the Trany to lock-up in OD. The '83 should have a TH700 which will not lock-up without the ECM.
Sincerely,
Kurt
