I have an 82 Firebird with the L4 2.5 ltr 4 cylinder motor, what other cars had that same motor (Fiero's??)??? what I want to do is get another motor, have it machined and rebuilt and then put it in my car, this way there would be as little down time as possible. I am not looking for any type of exotic work to be done to the motor, I just want a very reliable daily driver that will still be good on gas. by the time the motor would be ready to be put in pretty much everything but the block and cylinder head,crank and exhaust man would be new.

 

is your 2.5L dead? How do you know what kind of machine work will be needed with it?

Yea, the iron duke is a very common motor. Fiero, olds omega I think, a whole mess of other small GM's throughout the years. oh yea, my buddy had one in a buick skyhawk I think it was. 1987.

You can probably find a grandma driven small GM with that motor in it, and just re-ring it. I definately wouldn't want to spend any serious cash on that little motor, kinda defeats the purpose of saving gas $ by driving it, if you spend $1000 on parts for it.

 

my motor isn't dead. the work I would prob have done would be to have the block bored just to clean things up,have the head gone through so I know there are no issuse with it. really no major maching working, just get things cleaned up and dble checked to make sure everything looks good to go.

 

You would want a rear-wheel drive engine - chevy s10 or chevy monza, and believe it or not, a few chevy astro vans all had 2.5's - I believe the s-10 2.5 might be your easiest and cheapest route - they end up getting pulled for v-8 swaps all the time. I've seen nice runners go with a trans for $100 several times..
