3rd gen to 4th gen Swapping Info
I have a 1992 pontiac firebird w/a 3.1(189ci) L engine. these engines are very slow, charts show only 140 hp! and then u say well u'll get good gas mileage. well not really comparing that 02 5.7 L engines have dbl the HP and better feul economy!
I'm thinking about swapping a new engine in my car. I dont really no any info though. and theirs so many sticky's it be easeir if someone could just tell me specifically.
i want to put a 4th gen engine in. does anyone no how to do this? will the engine mounts work? what about other gm cars like malibus and monte carlos will thier engine put up gd hp and fit in my car? i cant figure out the difference between LT's and LS's and all the different versions of them.
can somebod y please give me the scoop?

Just take a while and browse the LTX/LSX swap page.. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-lsx/ there's so much useful info there and by just looking around a while you will get a better idea of what is involed.
The swap is fairly straight forward, I did a LS1/T56 swap from a 2002 super sport. You will need new motor mounts, new trans crossmember, notch your engine crossmember for AC, chop up your existing engine harness to give the new one power etc., heater and radiator hoses, AC lines, figure a way for your speedo to work, coolant temp. guage, calibrate tachometer, clutch pedal modification, exhaust. It would be recommended to upgrade your driveshaft, rear end and torque arm as well as putting some subframe connectors and better suspension. A nice cam and a spec stage3 clutch are also nice additions
Im sure theres more but im on my lunch hour.

Im sure theres more but im on my lunch hour. I have an 87 bird that I put a 94 3.4L into. It was pretty easy. The only thing we had to replace was the flywheel. The 87 engine was externally balanced so we had to buy a neutral flywheel for the 94. Good luck!
