Have no idea what I'm doing
I have a 91 RS with a v6. I'm pretty sure its stock and nothing is really wrong with it. I want to do a engine swap with an LT1. I know everything about getting a doner call and all that, but i can't even get there because I have no idea how to do a swap. It would be easy to have a mechanic do it, but I know that will be pricy. Can anyone make suggestions of where somehow learn about engines and swapping and what kind of tools and equipment I would need. Some of you probably think I'm an idiot and if i don't know anything then why do I want to do it. Please if anyone can help that would be great. Thanks.

6 Months ago I didnt know a damn thing about cars. Then I bought my first Camaro. 6 months of tooling around with the Camaro and reading these forums non stop has taught more than most could possibly believe.

How much experience do you have and do you know any mechanically inclined friends? Engine swaps are fairly easy, but for a first thing besides changing brake pads its VERY intimidating and difficult- especially V6 to an LT1 due to the massive amount of rewiring compared to the common 305 to 350 that everyone does.

buy a good haynes, chilton manual and just go for it. it seems hard but it's not bad once you get going. this website is a godsend for info. My advise is take your time and get the proper tools and try not to take shortcuts.you will have to deal with them later so do it right the first time. there is no better feeling than completeing a engine rebuild or swap yourself.

Make friends with some gearheads and start hanging out at their place on the weekends. Also spend some time every day on thirdgen reading through the various forums. You can learn TONS on this site. I learned 50% of the stuff I know about cars just from hanging out on this site, the other 50% I learned from hanging out with gear heads and asking lots of questions. I did my first engine swap this summer. It was just a basic carbed 305 to carbed 350, but it still took me a month and a half because I didn't really know what I was doing. But I learned a ton, and it was a great experience.
