Building a 396
Building a 396
I have recently desided I would love to build a 396 and was wondering if any of you guys knew the specs as far as cranks, blocks, rods, and what not. I've never built a stroked engine before just regular 305, 350, 400, or whatever.

I just did a quick ebay search... you have a few options and NONE of them are cheap, if you would like to build a 383, those you can build for cheap(er) in comparison, you will need to use a 6.0 connecting rods or bigger and I suggest to keep every thing forged. If you want to go larger then the 396 you can go into the 400 while still keeping the 350 block, it will need alot of clearancing done either way... Good luck with the build.

My long term goal is a 396 LT1. I plan to use a Callies Dragonslayer crank. 3.875" stroke vs. 3.48" stock stroke. The forged crank enables it to be internally balanced among other things. Set up for a 5.85" rod. If you are starting with a Gen1 350, they use 6.00" rods. The cranks run around $800. Haven't seen an off the shelf piston for this arrangement so expect to buy $650 worth of custom slugs. Then the whole mess has to balanced.
