What is This Engine Piece? (84 Firebird)

A buddy of mine pulled his stock 305 from his 84 Firebird and replaced it with a 350. When all was said and done, he had this piece leftover and no clue where it goes. I don't know much about engines - can someone tell me what this piece is and where it goes?

Thanks,
Joe

Looks like that exhaust valve that goes in on the passenger side just after the manifold. I guess it helps the engine warm up faster or something.

throw it in the trash.... its a butterfly valve that make the motor "warm up faster" very dumb, very useless, hurts exhaust flow.....

Technically it's called the EFE valve for Early Fuel Evaporation. It closes when the engine is cold to route exhaust gases under the intake plenum to prevent fuel pooling until the engine warms up. It is operated via a thermal vacuum switch on the intake manifold. If the car still has the underhood vacuum diagram decal, that's what it will be called.

Some places that have strict emissions inspections will require it to be present and operating. If you don't live in such an area, you can get by without it. Technically, it's a violation of federal law to remove it.

How did he get the exhaust hooked up without it?
