what 1/4 mile times to expect from a 425 horse engine, and a 625 horse engine?
ok guys my 86 iroc has been a LONG slow project for me. im trying to decide on an engine to put in. im looking at a 400 small block custom built and told it will be about 625 horse. i will use it mostly on the street and it will be carbed and im told it will be a pain in the butt to drive on the street with a 950 cfm carb and 5 speed. i can have the engine done for about 6700 bucks minus intake/carb and ignition. im thinking more mild and going with the zz383 turn key crate engine from gm. it will be 425 horse. will the 625 horse be to hard to drive on the street? im also thinking if i do the 625 horse 400small block, going with a holley fuel injection set up. im worried about gas mileage to.......lol just kidding! my car will not be set up for drag racing......it has specific rate springs all the way around and lowered. im not worried about the suspension slowing me down in the 1/4 mile, i want it to handle!. hint.....talk me into the 400 small block.lol. thanks guys

asking a question like that- you can't handle the horsepower, go with the 383,plus it has a warranty

yeah go with the 383 crate motor! if you ever needed those 200 horses... You could just use nitrous. 425 hp on the street should be plenty!

Stick with the crate engine, warranties are always nice.On top of that,Yes there are reliabilty issues, yes there will be serious drivability issues.and I'd be awfully scared of a smallblock that makes over 600hp for $6700.It might once, but I can't see it lasting too long.
5 speed you say?PLEASE tell me your not going to stick even the 425 hp in front od a T5!

Well i am building a 400 small block, with streetability in mind i am only shooting for 550 hp so it will not give me that many issues, 625 hp will kill you at idle, the 383 will be more friendly all the way arround, it depends on your application, the day you get smoked by a 03-04 cobra with the 383, you will say"man if i had that 400..." so i hope i help you make your decision, you dont have to take the 400 to its maximum potential.
