85 tpi to 88 tbi

Hi new to this site I have a 1985 tA that had a 305 tpi in it I am putting in a 305 tbi out of a 1988 camaro the problem I have is I don't have a ECM for the car should I buy one that goes with the motor or the one that goes with the car ?? The wiring harness is still in the car so would that work with the new motor and the ECM I need ? Thanks hope this isn't too stupid of a question as I am just starting out in this car thing.

Welcome to thirdgen.org.

Why are you doing this? The TPI engine is the superior set-up.

When I got the car someone had already removed the motor and computer out of the car and replaced it with and older 350 (not working very good) and a bad tranny. I can pick up a 305 TBI and 700r4 tranny out of a low milage 88 z28 for next to nothing.

Okay, that part wasn't clear.

The TPI harness and TBI harness are quite different. It would be best to get the ECM and harness to the engine, along with all sensors, from the TBI car.

I know a guy who re-pinned a TBI harness when he converted to TPI, and he spent a long time doing it. Even he admits it wasn't the smart way to go. I wouldn't recommend you try it.

I have found a computer and TBI wiring harness The only question I have is do you know if the TBI engine harness will plug into the main harness I already have from the TPI set up ?

You mean under the dash? I believe the answer to that is "yes".
