stupid idea, 0lds 307

I can get an 87 cutlass 307 4bbl engine for almost nothing. I have a an 84 camaro that i want to put this in. Is this engine any good? Is it even comparable to a 305, hp wise. I mean like compared to a stock 305 would this thing make much different hp and torque. And can i use 305 parts on this engine like headers and carbs? I am just trying to do this cheap, if this is just a stupid idea please let me know.

I dont know anything about that motor but you might spend more swaping it into your car than what you would have just buying a 305 or 350.

I had an 87 regal w/the olds engine in it. They say it'll run forever, but don't expect too much from it. My 92 festiva had more pep/fun factor.

Then there's the 5,000 feet of vacuum hose if you keep it in factory smog form.

The only thing that cain possibly be brought over would be the cc carb.

If you do decide to swap over, get an adaptor plate for the tranny, and new motor mount brackets (most likely, but I never had to look at the regals location & compare to a monte w/the 305)

OK than i guess i will go with my original plans a good ol carbed 350. Problem is i am having trouble finding one thats in decent shape. Id like to get it ready to install, or ready to run. With everything need to start the engine. Also need a tranny i was planning on putting a 700r4 first but would just love it if it were standard. Problem is i hear the t-5 wont take much torque. Any opinions? If i am installing the 350 i don't plan on it pushing more than 260 or 280 hp, after i have done a few mods to it.

and o yha, smog isn't a problem where i live as long as its got a cat inspection won't be a problem

Definately a different bolt parrern.

The 307 isn't a powerhouse definately NOT much for performance but they are somewhat bulletbroof. As far as performance maybe close but a little better torque.

Yea man, id go 4 it, i was debating on that combo 4 awhile, but decided to go with a Olds 350 rocket, (D@mn good combo by the way... 67 feet of tire squealing fun) anyway the 307 is good motor for gas mileage (as long as you stay out of the 4bbl, but wat fun is that? ), it can be built up, but not as good as some of the other motors. your best bet would be to find a 1985 442 307 which was the best year these came, Roller Cam, 5A heads, ETC...
But now that i think about it, i would have much rather have plopped a Rat-trap Buick Grand National motor... Because as much as i love my Camaro, Im A Buick Man at heart... and just remember,

I'd say, the title of your post says it all. You've already figured it out.

That's an "OK" motor, just as far as being a motor; runs OK, lasts a long time, has the typical good things and stupid things that Olds motors have.

The exhaust is COMPLETELY different. No, Chevy exhaust will not bolt to it.

The transmission bolt pattern is different. No, it will not bolt to ANY transmission that came in ANY of these cars, except for the one in the TTA. It certainly won't bolt up to anything that came in your 84. Finding a bell housing and flywheel that will work is going to be a real challenge, without going $$aftermarket$$.

Now... it's got about the same HP & torque as the LG4. Something in the neighborhood of 145 HP & 240 ft-lbs or some such. In other words, you're going to be running a HUGE amount of maze, and there's about half a crumb of cheese at the end.

So what will end up happening, is that you will spend more money bolting this "free" (well, maybe not even "free"... it does nothing but get worse if you have to pay ANYTHING AT ALL for it) low-output turd into your car, than what you could buy & build a nice hot-running small block Chevy for.

So, since you've already realized that the Rocket 307 isn't such a good idea after all, keep on looking for a Chevy motor, that won't cost so much or be so much trouble to put into your car.

Research the going price for said 307...if it is more than what you are paying for it, buy it, re-sell it, and invest in a different motor.
