Re: Trailblazer 4.2 inline 6 w/ turbo...? sorry for the long post
Great question asked early on in the post, but wasn't answered. Would the old transmission bolt right up to the 4.2 I6? That is the 5 speed that came with the original 305? I currently have a 1991 z28 with tuned port injection and it is backed by the 5 speed transmission. I am really interested in this post and have driven a 2003 LTZ Trailblazer with the same motor discussed in this post. It is a very bullet proof motor and even with upwards of 120,000 miles the engine runs strong/like new.

Auto Roc,
Did you encounter any troubles with the swap? Mainly bolting in and what specific transmission did you use? Are you able to get your speedometer to work? Tachometer?

I didn't see any finished pictures posted, I don't even have it in the car yet. I'll use the 4L65E trans that comes in the trailblazer and a Yank 3600 converter.
I still need to fab the engine mounts and I am thinking about cutting the firewall a little and moving the engine back as much as possible. It will leave more room up front for the turbo and take some weight off the nose.

Sweet!
What part of MI are you in? Let me know if you need a reflash-I got a standalone tune up and running in my Supra.

I am in Dearborn, Ford country! I will need boatloads of help so I appreciate the tune! Hoping it won't take too long to get to that bridge. When can I send it to you?
With the interior being COMPLETELY destroyed, I am wondering what from the interior I will still need to get to make it run. I want to find and install a complete shifter assembly from a trailvoy into my car also. Thanks a million!

Re: Trailblazer 4.2 inline 6 w/ turbo...? sorry for the long post
I dunno, the longer crank, extra cam, and extra valves, springs, etc add up - not to mention an sbc's weight is in more of a compact space its not so tall and doesn't sit so far in front of the front wheels I dunno, maybe I am missing something. Either way its an interesting swap and I can't wait to see it done.

I have a wiring guide that explains everything you need to do to get it to run.

I had no clue you were local! I should probably get HPT or EFI live huh? Which would you recommend? I know a lot of people who love efi live but I've never worked with any efi program.

Re: Trailblazer 4.2 inline 6 w/ turbo...? sorry for the long post
You'll probably want to get a tuning tool if you're going to turbo it. I got HPT because it was cheaper, but I think they are of the about the same caliber. Go HPT so we can compare notes! I'll be starting on my own turbo tune in a couple months.
That said, if you'd like me to turn off VATS and some codes so you can get started, I'd be more than happy to stop by.

if you plan on going for the precision 6765 or 6768, there 67 mm units, get the .96 ar unit if you plane on going over 500hp. the vq35de's that are in nissans choke after that on the .81. they have a higher ve and rev higher granted but i imagine the bigger displacement will be about the same. also on a 3.5L the 6765 journal bearing is hitting 16 psi at about 4k rpms so expect power early on =D

My wife's car is an infiniti FX. I didn't know that I could love a SUV. The Vq is that good.

gt motorsports, greddy, and jim wolf tech all make twin turbo kits, momentum performance, boosted performance(single guy operation he dosnt have a website but you can find him on my350z.com he offers the largest single turbo and only midmount has had good results so far.) powerlab and turbonetics all offer single turbo kits. granted these are all for the g35 and 350z i dont know what would have to be done to the suv to make them fit. also theres vortech and procharger superchargers. do you have the vq35de or vq35hr? de seems to bend rods at anything over 450hp on the stock block the hr seems ok to the 500-550 hp range. boosted performance is who im using for my z with his 6765 kit but im looking to hit 700 rwhp running 70% 92/30% xylene and meth. dynosty/injected performance is building my block. look at about 10-13k for a stock block setup for the entire turbo kit, plus install and tuning.(my entire setup is costing me about 20k for the block, turbo kit, engine managment, fuel system and cooling system and im doing most of the install work myself =/) and one final note with the smalled boosted performance kit he uses a precision 6262, that with ball bearing option should hit full boost around 3k fyi but its gona max about 500-550 hp

Nice job man. My last DD was a 2005 Trailblazer LT that I had for 100k miles and 4.5 years. I loved that truck. I had a K&N FIPK, Airraid 1 inch throttle body spacer and a built 4L60E. It was fully loaded and still spun the tires past 1/2 throttle on the 1-2 shift.

I started a build thread for my 4.2 swapped IROC-Z. I have about 400 miles on it now, getting some miles in before the snow. Turbo install happening as I type. Intercooler is mounted, cold piping is next!

Your 2005 4.2 trailblazer can be hopped up but not cheap. You can do a ported head and custom cams for a few thousand dollars. It might gain you 50-100 hp. Custom header is worth power. Engine needs to come out for head removal, the headbolts break easily and have to be extracted, etc. Porting might run you $500 to 2000+ depending on how crazy you want to get. Custom cams could be in the $1200-1600 range. You buy billet cores and have Comp cams grind them. Computer tuning can be done.
The best way to keep up with an SS, the best way is:
100 shot of nitrous
3600-4000 stall converter
Sticky tires
