383 for my 84

hey i have a stock 84 camaro with a v6 in it im tireds of it and need some thing that will keep up to my frends 67 camaro which runs high 11 on the street and mid 11 on the strip. i was thinking a 383 with a th400 tranny with a shift kit and b&m ratchet shifter /posi, but i'm not sure what cam, pistion, carb, heads, torque converter stall to use. i have rebuilt a few motor in my garage so i was thinking i would take on a 383 stroker. thanks jason

There are plenty of 383 builds on these pages. Search this and the Tech forum, see what other people have done.

Theres actually very little to worry about building a 383:

1. Clearance the block. The rods are likely going to bump the oil-pan rails, use a die grinder to clearance them around .060 all around. Be careful, and if you want to be super safe, run a little hard-blok in the bottom of the block to seal / stiffen things up.

2. Make sure the rods don't hit the cam

Eagle makes an awesome crank/rod combination for a 383 thats super strong and good to 500hp - the quality of their products are good from what I've experienced, so I'd say go with their cast steel crank and rods.

As far as pistons, if you're going to shoot for higher than 350hp, think of going with forged pistons - Speedpro offers a 383 piston that has the skirt coating and lightweight design, which is nice if you want to get RPM out of the monster.

Thats the easy part though - the cam and heads should be carefully chosen. But here's what I'd suggest in general:

1. High flow heads - ideally you'll want around a 200cc intake / 70cc exhaust runner. Bigger if the motor is more radical, smaller if its more mild.

2. 10:1 compression is a really safe number for a street engine.

3. Go as big as u want with the cam. lol. My 383 is getting .570/.574 lift and 230/236 duration @ .050. Va-va-va-vooom.

Good luck man, have fun with it.
