VSS/Mecho sender for 700r4/LT1 swap
Hi all,
I scored a 95 Roadmaster LT1 for $300 and I want to swap it into my car with a mechanical speedo. I have a fresh 700r4 and I am going to use the vss/mecho transmission mounted combo unit from the Corvettes but I am having trouble finding a part number for it. I found a guy on ebay that sells them but he want $90 shipped.
ebay item: 90-92 TPI LT1 VSS Speed Sensor Cable Drive 700R4 4L60
Item number: 220060754305
NAPA online has them for $35 going off assuming that it is from a 93 Corvette. They show the following:
Vehicle Speed Sensor ECH VSS214 $33.99
Mounted on Transmission Color Code: Black w/ OEM # 10456092
Vehicle Speed Sensor ECH VSS215 $32.99
Mounted on Transmission Color Code: Neutral w/ OEM # 10456091
Vehicle Speed Sensor ECH VSS207 $46.99
Mounted on Transmission w/ Stamping # D8I w/ OEM # 10456022, 10456089
Based on the rear end gears I have I need the black one for 34-39 tooth driven gears but can anyone verify if this is the correct number? I can't find any info on a specific part number to use. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Alex

Use the VSS from like a 88-89 Trans Am and what you will want to do to make it easiest is get the CableX box which converts the VSS to a mechanical output.

since you are using the 95 roadmaster engine, I'm going to assume you are using the ecm and all the fuel injection with it. The 95 ecm expects a 40 pulse per single output shaft rotation, which won't be provided with a 90-92 sending unit.(4 pulse)
check out jagsthatrun.com, and look for a PDF on speed sensors. this document describes everything quite well. I've been through this situation already, and we actually retrofit the cable to a 4l60E, and added another vss for the 40ppr sensor. Required some machine work for the second sensor, and it wasn't exactly easy.
after doing all that, I believe the easiest way (though more money) is to use the factory 40ppr sending unit from a 95 roadmaster, and drive the ecm with this signal, and drive the cable with the cable-x box from this signal also. no machine work, only one sensor, and just some wiring, and you are sailin'.

Thanks for the replies. These are good solutions but I didn't want to spend that much money for the cablex box or redoing the tailshaft housing since I would like to upgrade to a TKO 5 speed in the future and I hate to spend all that money just to have to ditch it later. My train of thought was to use the vss/mech unit and adjust the vss output with tunercat till it reads the right speed at the pcm and keep the mechanical speedo. I just thought using an oem type sender would keep the install clean as well. Worse case I guess I'll use a mechanical sender for the speedo and add an aftermarket screw on sender. Whadda you guys think?

Is that the one that is the combo mech speedo drive/vss? That's what I was trying to find but I can't confirm a GM part number for it. I found one on ebay from a guy that claims it is for 90-92 tpi and 92-93 lt1 but the price was $90. One of the internet transmission places had the same thing for $156. When I checked Autozone online they showed it at about $35 using a sender from Wells. However when I checked the picture from the Wells online catalog, they showed a vss design only with no mechanical drive. No one in town has one I can check out to see if it's right so I'd have to buy one to see if it is the right one or not. I tried Checker, NAPA,and PepBoys too with no luck. So I figured I'd order one if I can get a part number to confirm as they show a cross reference to GM part numbers in the Wells catalog. If someone can verify the part numbers I posted at the beginning that would help a lot. Or if someone has the AC Delco/GM part number for the original vss/mech combo that would be even better. <g> Thanks.
