1986 305HO flywheel specs?
1986 305HO flywheel specs?
Hi guys, Im new to the Chevy world, and have a simple question I'm sure some of you can easily answer. I have a 305 HO out of a 1986 Monte carlo. This is an internally balanced motor, and I need a flywheel for it. So my question is, what flywheel will fit? Which Camaro came with a 305 HO and a manual transmission?
Thanks for your help in advance

hi there
well being an HO makes no difference
all the 86 and up are a new design RMS, they changed to one piece design in 86, and 86-up is "external" balance/different balance than pre-86
so you need an 86 up wheel and they are pricey and not real common in the good used world anyways,

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
ALL 305s & 350s are internally balanced; however, on the 86-up ones, because of the way the seal works and the resulting need for a perfectly round flange, the rearmost little bit of the internal balance weight, which used to be part of the flywheel flange, got moved to the flywheel.
I know that sounds weird; the motor is internally balanced, but the weight is on the flywheel. But, it's true. "Internal balance" has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with which side of the oil seal, or which side of the crank/flywheel junction, the weight is on.
Regardless, LEAVE THOSE WORDS OUT OF your search for a flywheel. They will do nothing but get you into trouble. Utter them, and the brains of about 99% of the hot-rodding world go instantly into vapor lock.
Randy is exactly right, any 305 flywheel for 86-up Camro/Firebird will work. The ONLY size that will fit in the ONLY stock bell housing that will fit in these cars is 12.8" outer diameter, with 153 teeth; and of course, with the smaller bolt pattern and pilot hole in the center. The ONLY clutch that will fit is the 10.4" size.
I'd recommend the lightweight flywheel listed down there. The TPI and L69 cars came with that one; the TBI and LG4 ones, with the grocery-cart rear gear, came with the heavier one, to make it easier to break the car loose from a dead stop without stalling the motor. If you have a reasonable rear gear in the car, like 3.42 or 3.73, you'll like the light one ALOT better.
