Re: do i really need a computer?

sounds like you and me are doing the same thing. alright, no computer for one, which means your doing the wireing. your gauges.... im getting all auto meter mechanical gauges. and the electronic ones, just get the proper sensors. so you could do the same. about doing that with the stockers, well if your changing a 305 to a 350, no way your keeping it under 90 mph anyway. but i wouldnt know what to do bout that. hope i helped a bit

Re: do i really need a computer?

You can get rid of the computer, and the whole harness that goes on the passanger side. Dont touch the harness under the master cylinder, thats the harness for your gauges, coil, lights, and blower motor.

do any of you have a good link to a site that would tell me how to wire my engine w/o a computer using the proper relays, fuses and correct gauge wires?

I am going to do about the same thing I have an 84 TA with a carbed 305 . I will be swapping it with a 383 carbed. I have been doing alot of searching and have not found much info yet, but if I do I wil post what I find. After I get the motor pulled next week I will be able to look at the wiring a little closer too .

For the '87 car, the wiring is fairly straight-forward - for the things that need power, use what wire powered it before the swap - coil (distributor, if going large-cap HEI), oil pressure, coolant temp, alternator, AC, etc. You'll probably need to find a 12v switched source for an electric choke if your car currently is EFI, otherwise, just use the existing wire. Everything else can be removed without cutting any wires, as it goes in a bundle to the passenger side fenderwell. The basic engine power and gages don't go through the computer.

You may have issues keeping the in-tank electric fuel pump running. If so, look for the recent thread regarding TPI to carb swap on the Carburetor forum - a responder described exactly what to do.

If you have a digital speedometer, you'll probably need a different vehicle speed sensor in the T5. The TH700 unit won't fit the T5.

If the tranny has a cable drive in it, you only need to make sure the speedo gears are right for your rear gears and tires.

You need to get a mechanical drive for it. The hole's the same.

Re: do i really need a computer?

I have a 84 TA with the 305HO that i'm swapping out with just another 305 replacement, but i want to get rid of all of the emissions stuff. What will happen if i just dont plug the emissions sensors back in? Is there a way to remove that stuff and not have to ditch the computer too?
