almost ready to swap!?!?!?!

here is the situation i have an 87 firebird 305 th700 carburated that is just itching to get my 355 casting #14093638 and t5 in it. now from searching the forums and with the help from all of you good people here on TGO i have decided to go with the 081 heads off of the 305 and I'm gonna use the roller cam out of it too the issue is 1.) passing emissions in mass (i do know someone) i just need to know how to cheat the system 2.) all the little problems i will occur like the thing i just read about the motor mounts and removing the a arm and a couple of other things like how much lift can the 081 take stock and what is the combustion chamber on the 081

The only "cheating" is the 350 itself. Since it looks just like the 305, no particular problem there unless they get **** there like they do in California.

Keep the complete carb & control system. If you use the stock cam, no issues with lift (not sure what you're asking there).

It should pass without any problems.

Re: almost ready to swap!?!?!?!

so i pulled the engine and tranny this week i installed the clutch setup and pulled the 081 heads off my carbed 305 then i pulled out the roller cam so that i can put it back in my 350 my question is do i need to use break in lube on this 305 cam when i put it in the 350 and will my push rods be long enough for this felpro head gasket also will the head gasket from autozone work with my .030 over bore?
thanks for any help you guys can offer!

No cam lube necessary, that's just for flat tappets. Just make sure they're well oiled.

Forgot to ask if the 638 block was machined for the roller lifter provision. Some are, some aren't. If it isn't, you'll need to go to a flat tappet cam.

If it was roller lifter, then the pushrods from the 305 will work fine. The head gasket won't make enough difference to bother with. And, the head gasket is most likely a generic SBC gasket, good for anything up through over-bored 350.

By the way, the 081 castings are advertised as having 58cc chambers.

I would think you'll need at least a cat to pass sniffer. But, you may get lucky.

The 350 will make a significant difference if your exhaust and air cleaner are up to the task. Be nice to that poor T5.

Re: almost ready to swap!?!?!?!

thanks a ton five7 today i reassembled the engine with out any hangups thanks to you guys at tgo the only thing i didn't know was how much to torque the heads so i used red thread lock and 55 ft lbs is that good enough? two more questions for today there is a little butterfly in my stock passenger exhaust flange. what is it for and what is the best method for reinstalling exhaust manifolds + torque specs
