torque converter
Hello,
I'm swapping my 2.8 v6 for a 305 soon and i had a couple questions about the torque converter/input shaft on my 700-r4 (1984)
I see that v8 trannys used a 30 spline input shaft/torque converter, and the v6 trannys used a 27-spline setup. how do i make everything fit? (do i need a new input shaft?)
do i even need to mess with it? (will the 27-spline input/converter work with my SBC?)
thanks for any help

Re: torque converter
The 700R4 from the 2.8 can not be used with any SBC. The bellhousing will not even come close to mating with the transmission.
Get a 700R4 from any 4.3. 5.0 or 5.7 car and you will be set.

Re: torque converter
um, yeah, i'm aware of that. that was also something i meant to ask. what other transmissions could i get a working bellhousing off of? would one from a th400 work?
and also, figuring i get the *right* bellhousing, what am i looking at in terms of messing around with the input shaft/torque converter?
PS i dont have much money or time to spend on this. I can't afford the money or space to juggle another (nearly identical) transmission unless it's just to pull a few parts of, plus i dont want to move to another transmission because i dont *want* to have my driveshaft length adjusted and i can't afford the time that would take, plus i am going to need that overdrive gear for some long trips this summer.

V8 TH700's went from 27 to 30 splines in '84, I believe (may have been '85). Just get a transmission with a torque converter, and you won't have to worry about it.
You're getting a transmission, by the way, not a bell housing. Forget using anything from the V6 transmission with the possible exception of the tailshaft housing or shifter arm, in case your transmission comes from something other than a 3rd gen.
