Transmissons to BBC

I was curious to know if a T56 trans would fit into a BBC VI 454 HO crate engine. Thought about taking a short cut on power and money by droping a BBC instead of building on a sbc. i mean 425hp and 500 tor. cant go wrong with that. thats brutal power for our cars.....then again, the T56 might not handle it.......

Yes and no. Although it will bolt up, the 454 is an externally balanced engine. The T56 flywheel is designed for an internally balanced engine. You either need to build the 454 with an internally balanced crank or get the T56 flywheel externally balanced for the 454.

I'm pretty sure the T56 flywheel is also designed for a one piece rear main seal. The BBC up to and including 1990 (and the majority of the aftermarket blocks) are a 2 piece rear main seal. In 1991 the Mark V block was introduced with a one piece rear main. The VI will be a one piece rear main seal.

It can be done but it's not a simple "swap the parts over" swap.

Or, to put it a better way, you need a T56 flywheel balanced and set up to attach to a Gen VI 454.

Re: Transmissons to BBC

I was looking at the Hawks website and was looking closly at the specs of the 454 HO. The 454 HO is the engine i wou love to have considerin i would love to drive it on the highways. The I got some intel i really needed. Hawks as part numbers listed at the bottom of the page for manual transmission parts. Such as flywheel wheels. To me this helps alot considerin i been wonderin if i could just buy the flywheel. It also tells me that a 11 inch clutch kit needs to be used and since i did a littler more diggin i found that the input shaft of the T56 trans is also 1.125 or 1 1/8 and its a 26spline. Really good news now that i have this intel now. The also recommended a 4 quart oil pan as well as the HEI distribator. Its really nice to see that i now have the part numbers. Now all i have to do is figure the size of the carb i need for the 454 HO engine as well as the part numbers for the Headers. I dont think the 454 HO engine has rasied ports so im in luck as far as the fitting is concerned. I now have the part numbers for the engine and for the trans parts minus the carb and headers. Now all i have to do is find out if the 9 bolt rear can handle the 500 ftlbs of tor. This is a street car that will have street tires and maybe drag radials. And yes once the engine is broke it i will deifntly hit the hammer and nail the gas pedal to the floor. Whats the point of havin a BBC under the hood if you cant play with it lol.

No, the 9 bolt will die a really quick painfull death with a BBC.

You need to make certain this flywheel is for the 92+ engines because they are ballanced completely different. Ive been there before and it's not good. I'd suggest you look on one of the big GMPP sites or give them a call so you get the correct part.
